Capacity honesty for HD alignment work
Let us be honest up front. A scissor lift / portable is not the answer for a Class 8 rig. Peterbilts, Kenworths, and Freightliner day-cabs weigh 15,000 to 20,000 pounds unloaded on the front axle group alone, and no portable format is built for that. Class 8 alignment lives on a dedicated 60,000-pound platform lift or a purpose-built alignment pit, and that is not what this article is about. But Class 5 through low Class 6 — 16,000 to 26,000 GVWR straight trucks, box trucks, and cutaway chassis empty-weight-wise — sit in a range that a heavy-capacity portable scissor can handle if you spec correctly.
The eastern Nebraska caller was seeing an F-550 dump, an Isuzu NPR box truck, a couple of ambulance chassis, and a Ford E-450 cutaway shuttle. Empty curb weights on these run 8,000 to 13,000 pounds. A 15,000-pound heavy-duty scissor lift / portable with a long-wheelbase deck handles them all with margin. The step from a light-duty 9,000-pound scissor to a heavy-duty 15,000-pound is significant in both price and physical footprint, but it is what actually fits this segment.
Bay layout with a scissor lift / portable in an HD shop
The bay layout question is different in an HD shop than a car shop. Bay ceilings are usually higher (14 feet and up), doors are usually taller (12-foot minimum), and floors are usually poured heavy (six inches or more). What matters instead is bay depth and turning radius. A Class 5 or 6 chassis at 25 feet long needs a bay at least 32 feet deep to drive on and turn a wheel to steering-angle full-lock. Any lift geometry has to sit inside that footprint without blocking the drive path.
A scissor lift / portable wins here for a specific reason: when not in use, it rolls out of the drive path entirely. A permanent alignment rack committed to Class 6 work sits in the bay whether you are using it that day or not. The portable scissor rolls to the wall, restoring the bay to open floor for whatever else needs to happen — brake service on a smaller chassis, tire work, or just parking a completed job. In a two-bay shop where you cannot afford to burn one bay full-time on a rack that gets four alignment jobs a week, the flexibility is real value.
Equipment cost bracket for HD-capacity scissors
A 15,000-pound heavy-duty scissor lift / portable is not cheap. The bracket runs from the low teens up to the low twenty-thousands depending on manufacturer, deck length, and alignment pairing options. What separates the top and bottom of the bracket is deck geometry, cylinder specification, and whether the model has factory-approved alignment-rack turn plates and slip plates.
For alignment specifically, the alignment-approved variant is what you want. A regular high-capacity scissor lifts the truck but does not give you a way to run wheel angles at the specified geometry. The alignment-approved variant integrates turn plates at the front and slip plates at the rear, giving you the same functional geometry as a permanent alignment rack but on a rolling deck. Expect to pay a premium of a few thousand for the alignment package versus a plain HD scissor. Worth it if you are billing alignment work.
Freight to eastern Nebraska
Freight on an HD-capacity lift is not the same as on a car-shop scissor. The crated weight of a 15,000-pound-capacity rig runs 3,500 to 4,500 pounds, which means it ships palletized on a flatbed and needs either a forklift or a crane to unload. Two people can move the machine on a flat slab but you want a forklift for uncrating and initial positioning because the deck alone weighs several hundred pounds. Filling the hydraulic reservoir requires more fluid than a small unit — expect ten to fifteen gallons — and the break-in cycle takes longer to bleed air from the larger cylinders.
Total install labor: a full day for two techs plus a forklift operator. Turn plates and slip plates that come with the alignment package on the scissor deck are the mechanical geometry side of the equation. The Hunter heads and computer are the measurement side. Together they let you run a full four-wheel alignment on any chassis that fits the deck. Some shops try to add DIY alignment to a plain scissor without turn plates — the result is unreliable geometry and unhappy customers. Total cost and payback math
Roll up the eastern Nebraska caller’s numbers. Equipment (HD 15,000-pound alignment-approved scissor): mid teens. Freight and offloading: low four-figure. Against that, an alignment job on a Class 5 or 6 truck bills a mid-three-figure to low-four-figure amount depending on complexity, and his shop had customers asking for the service weekly. At three jobs a week with a mixed labor and parts margin, payback ran roughly eighteen months.
