An EV specialty shop in Cedar Rapids called us about a scissor lift / portable unit they were considering for seasonal vehicle storage between service jobs. The owner wanted flexibility: park two Rivians during a battery swap wait, and still have the same bay usable for daily undercarriage work the following week. That is exactly the workflow a scissor lift / portable setup is designed for, but only when the myths get cleared out first. We install and service lifts across eastern Iowa, and we spend as much time correcting layout mistakes as we do turning wrenches. Here is the straight talk we gave that shop, and what we tell every EV owner who asks the same question.

Myth: Storage And Service Cannot Share A Bay
The common assumption is that a lift used for storage is compromised for service, and vice versa. That is not true when the lift is chosen correctly. A scissor lift / portable unit with a locked hold position at multiple heights can safely hold an EV off the floor for weeks while a technician works underneath a second vehicle in the same bay. The lock system on a good scissor engages every couple of inches, which means the vehicle is not resting on the hydraulic cylinder pressure. It is resting on steel-on-steel mechanical locks that do not creep, leak, or fail quietly overnight.
What ruins this arrangement is choosing an entry-level pad lift without a mid-hold detent, or trying to stack storage duty on a low-rise scissor never rated for parking a full-size Rivian. We size the storage-plus-service scissor to the highest weight and longest wheelbase in the fleet the shop plans to serve. For most Cedar Rapids EV shops that means a 9,000 or 12,000 lb open-runway scissor with drive-on approach ramps. That single choice keeps storage and service on the same footprint without either job stealing capacity from the other.
Layout Myth: Portables Do Not Need A Plan
Because a scissor lift / portable format can be moved, shops sometimes assume the layout is casual. It is not. The bay still has to accept the runway length of the specific unit, plus the front turntable pockets if you plan to align, plus the drive-on and drive-off clearance at each end. A Rivian R1S needs more nose clearance than a Model 3, and a portable scissor with fixed ramp brackets will pinch either vehicle if the parking spot is off by six inches. We tape the bay in painter’s tape before install to walk the geometry.
The other layout myth is that ceiling height does not matter for a scissor. It matters for the technician, not the lift. A scissor tops out around 48 to 50 inches of raise on most alignment-grade units, which is friendly to low-ceiling storage buildings. But if the shop plans to swap in a mid-rise or full-rise later, the ceiling has to accommodate the tallest expected vehicle plus the tallest expected lift raise. Cedar Rapids winter storage buildings are often single-slope pole barns with 12 to 14 foot peaks. That is enough for a scissor, tight for a mid-rise.
Capacity Math For Modern EVs
Every EV shop owner should do the same simple calculation before shopping. Take the heaviest vehicle your shop will ever see, add 20 percent, and that is your minimum scissor lift / portable capacity. A dual-motor Rivian R1T with a Max pack is about 7,150 pounds curb, plus roof cargo and a passenger during positioning, easy to push 7,800. Multiplied by 1.2 gives 9,360 pounds. That is why we default to a 12,000 lb unit for Rivian and Lightning shops, and why we push back when an owner tries to save money on a 9,000 lb rating.
The 20 percent margin is not paranoia. It accounts for uneven weight distribution when a battery pack is unbalanced during service, for the front-heavy bias of large-motor pickups, and for the safety factor manufacturers assume during rating. Underweight scissors do not fail spectacularly. They wear pivots, stress cylinders, and eventually leak or bind. The failure mode is expensive and unglamorous. Buying the right capacity the first time is always the cheaper path. We stock cylinder seal kits and pivot bushings for the common Rotary and Challenger scissors, but the goal is that you never need them.
Ramp Approach And Air Dams
EVs sit low. Lowered EVs sit very low. If you are running any AWD sedan or a lowered Model S, the standard drive-on ramp angle of a scissor lift / portable unit can scrape the front air dam. That is a real complaint we hear, and it is fixable with a low-approach ramp accessory that flattens the entry angle by about half. Both Rotary and Challenger offer this accessory for their alignment-grade scissors, and we recommend it for any shop that touches performance EVs.
The other ramp consideration is single-vehicle versus tandem-vehicle bay use. Some shops park an EV on the scissor for storage and want to walk a second car under or beside the raised vehicle. That workflow demands enough side clearance at ramp height so that a technician does not have to duck under a hoist arm to reach the walk-through bay. We plan for a 30-inch minimum walk clearance on each side of a stored EV, which sets the minimum bay width. If the building will not permit that width, we recommend a different lift format or a different bay.
Power Requirements That Trip Up Shops
The scissor lift / portable format is friendly to modest power, but not zero power. Most alignment-grade scissors ship with a 220 volt single-phase motor, and portable relocation means the shop needs at least two 220 receptacles on separate walls if the lift is expected to serve two bays. We install a shop-side fast-disconnect that lets the technician unplug the power unit safely, roll the lift, and plug in at the new bay in under five minutes. Skipping that step and running an extension cord defeats the portable purpose and creates a real safety hazard.
Hydraulic power is also worth planning. Most scissors carry their own power pack on the frame, which is what makes portable relocation possible in the first place. But shops that add a second scissor sometimes try to share a single external power pack across both units to save money. That trick works on paper and fails in practice because the flow rates cannot support both lifts moving at once. Each portable scissor should have its own dedicated pack. Winter Storage Realities In Eastern Iowa
Cedar Rapids winters push seasonal storage volume up sharply between November and March.
