The scissor lift / portable category splits into two configurations that restoration shops care about. Mid-rise open-center is what most people picture: a scissor mechanism on each side of the deck with an open middle section, rising to about 45 inches. Full-rise pad-style is taller, up to about 72 inches, with the deck fully supporting the vehicle across a wider footprint. For a restoration shop pulling a body off a frame, the open-center mid-rise gives you access to the frame rails and floor pan from above. For the same shop doing metalwork on the rocker panels or quarter panels, the full-rise pad-style puts the work at chest height. Arm restraints: what they do and why restoration work stresses them

On a routine service job, the arm restraint engages when the pad is at the right position and the tech pushes it down onto the pinch weld. On a body-off restoration, the loading is different: the frame is on the lift without the body, weight distribution shifts as the body comes off, and the arm restraint has to hold through a load-shift event that a routine job never sees. The reinforced arm restraint on the restoration-grade scissor uses a spring-loaded pawl that engages positively rather than by friction. That difference is invisible when the lift is holding a stock vehicle in a stock configuration, and it is life-saving when the load shifts because the tech just unbolted the body mounts.
Safety-cam engagement: hearing every click as the deck rises
The safety-cam engagement on a portable scissor is the mechanical lock that catches the deck at every stop as it rises, typically every 2 to 2.5 inches. The tech hears an audible click at each engagement point, and when the lift is set down, it rests on the nearest engaged cam rather than on hydraulic pressure. This is the primary safety system on the lift; the hydraulics are secondary. On a restoration lift where the vehicle may sit at working height for weeks at a time while the body is off the frame, the safety-cam is what actually holds the load. The scissor lift / portable models we spec for restoration work engage every cam through the deck’s travel, and the tech can pick which cam to rest the vehicle on based on the working height needed. Metal work: welding sparks, grinding dust, and lift protection
Restoration work means welding sparks and grinding dust, and both are hard on a lift’s hydraulic seals and electrical contacts. A scissor lift / portable specced for restoration should have covered hydraulic hoses and a sealed motor housing on the power unit. Welding sparks landing on an exposed hose over months of use will eventually pit the outer layer, and grinding dust getting into a motor housing will eventually short a winding. This is a shop-crane-assist job, not a lift job, but the lift is holding the frame stable while the crane lifts the body. The scissor lift / portable has to hold that frame steady through a load event where roughly 800 pounds of body mass is being lifted off the top of the frame. The load-shift is small but real, and the arm restraints and safety-cam locks are what keep the frame on the deck through that shift. Fleet service on the same lift and how the configurations swap out
