A vehicle collector in the Des Moines metro called us two summers ago about a scissor lift / portable option for a new storage-and-service outbuilding he was finishing on his property. His pour was going in three weeks. His questions were about the concrete slab — thickness, rebar spacing, and whether a portable lift changed those requirements compared to a bolted-down two-post. Why a scissor lift / portable fit a collector’s storage-and-service setup
The collector had six vehicles — two daily drivers, three restored classics, and a project car in various states. His outbuilding was 40 by 30, with room for four cars in stationary storage and one active service bay. A permanent two-post in the middle of the floor would have carved a permanent zone into his layout. A scissor lift / portable, sized for his heaviest vehicle at 9,000 pounds, gave him a lift he could roll to whichever car needed work and roll away when he was hosting friends or moving cars around for photos. He wasn’t running a shop — he was running his own hobby space. The workflow he wanted was flexibility over throughput. A portable mid-rise scissor at 9,000 pounds was the right honest answer. We priced a Rotary unit and walked through slab requirements with his concrete contractor on speakerphone the following week.
Slab thickness — what a portable actually needs
People assume a scissor lift / portable needs less slab than a two-post because it doesn’t through-anchor. That’s partly true and partly wrong. What a portable does not need is the tension load a two-post’s anchors put into the top face of the slab. What it still needs is straightforward compressive support to carry the deck plus vehicle weight across its footprint without any long-term settling. For a 9,000-pound-capacity portable carrying a typical passenger vehicle, we recommend a minimum 4-inch slab of 3,000 psi concrete, cured a full 28 days before first use. For up to 12,000 pounds, we prefer 5 inches. The collector’s contractor was already pouring 5 inches for another reason, so he was covered. What we did adjust was the finishing spec — he was originally going for a broom finish and switched to a light steel-trowel finish that plays nicer with rolling casters.
Rebar and reinforcement — do you need it, and how much?
Reinforcement for a scissor lift / portable slab is less about the point loads and more about long-term crack resistance. Iowa freeze-thaw cycles are the actual enemy. We recommend #4 rebar on a 12-inch grid for any slab that will carry lift traffic, with the mat set 2 inches down from the top surface. That’s a modest spec — nothing exotic — and any concrete contractor in the Des Moines area does it every week. If your contractor suggests fiber-only reinforcement, get a second opinion. Fiber is fine as a secondary but shouldn’t replace rebar for a floor that carries a vehicle plus deck plus dynamic loading during raise/lower cycles. Delivery, install, and first raise
The slab cured for a full month before we delivered. LTL freight dropped the crate at his driveway; we walked it to the outbuilding on a pallet jack with plywood over the transition strip. The scissor lift / portable base sat on floor pucks — four small hardened steel pads — rather than through-anchors, because he wanted the option to move it. Setup took about three hours. Fluid, first empty cycle, first loaded cycle. His first vehicle on the lift was a 1972 Camaro for a differential fluid service. He raised it, drained the diff, refilled, and lowered without a hitch. The whole first-use experience took less than an afternoon. He texted us a photo of the car up on the lift at dinnertime.
The differential fluid service that started year one
Differential fluid on the Camaro was the perfect first job for the scissor lift / portable. Deck height at the third notch put him in a comfortable seated position under the axle. The fill plug on that rear-end sits high on the housing — annoying on jack stands, easy on a lift. He drained through the diff cover, pulled the cover to inspect gear teeth, cleaned everything, and refilled with fresh 80W-90. Total shop time was under two hours, most of which was letting fluid drain and cleaning the RTV surface. Compared to his previous garage workflow with jack stands, he saved roughly ninety minutes. He didn’t buy the lift to save time on hobby work — he bought it for comfort and safety — but he was happy with the productivity bump anyway.
What the first year looked like — moves, jobs, and lessons
Year one for the scissor lift / portable at the collector’s shop looked like this: 84 total raises, no callouts, two full re-positionings of the lift within the shop as he rearranged his storage, one seasonal check by us at month six that turned up a slightly loose hose fitting to torque. He learned that he preferred the second-lowest lock notch for most car work and the fifth notch for undercarriage detailing. He learned that his 240V outlet placement was 15 feet from the ideal lift position, so he added a heavy-duty extension cord to his shop tools list. Small things. The lift itself did its job without drama. He calls it his best hobby-space investment in a decade.
What he’d tell another collector planning the same setup
When we asked what advice he’d give another collector considering a scissor lift / portable for a home outbuilding, he had three items. Pour the slab thicker than the minimum — the marginal cost is small and you’ll appreciate it forever. Set your 240V outlet where the lift will live most of the time, even if you plan to move the lift occasionally. And don’t cheap out on the lift brand — buy something we or another supplier can get seal kits and cylinder parts for a decade from now.
