Why a scissor lift / portable is the right first lift for a home garage
The classic first-lift debate is two-post versus four-post. Both are permanent, both eat garage space, and both need serious ceiling height. A scissor lift / portable sidesteps all three constraints. It stores flat when not in use, it doesn’t need through-anchoring, and its mid-rise configurations fit under 8-foot residential garage ceilings without a fight. For a first-time buyer doing suspension and shock work on daily drivers, that’s a strong starting point. The tradeoff is you don’t get full standing room under the car — you’re working seated or crouched. For occasional home use, that’s a fine tradeoff. If your workload evolves toward full undercarriage inspection every weekend, you may eventually want to upgrade to a four-post. For now, a mid-rise scissor lift / portable is the honest first-lift pick.
Capacity model comparison — 6,000 vs 9,000 vs 12,000 pounds
The three common capacity tiers for a home-use scissor lift / portable are 6,000, 9,000, and 12,000 pounds. At 6,000 pounds you’re covered for most small sedans and mid-size crossovers but you’re at the edge for a full-size pickup. At 9,000 pounds you’re covered for anything short of a heavy one-ton or dually. At 12,000 pounds you’re covered for basically anything a home garage will see. The Urbandale buyer had a Ford F-150 SuperCrew (roughly 5,200 pounds) and a project 1970s Mustang (roughly 3,400 pounds). We recommended 9,000 pounds — not 6,000 — because his heaviest vehicle at 5,200 leaves too little margin at the 6,000 tier. The 9,000-pound lift also carried no meaningful cost premium at the tier we quoted. Buying at 9,000 pounds is the default we suggest for most home-garage first-time buyers.
Height class — mid-rise or full-rise for shock work?
Suspension and shock replacement is chest-height work when the wheel is off. That places the ideal deck height between the second and fifth locking notch on most mid-rise scissor lifts — roughly 24 to 42 inches. A mid-rise scissor lift / portable covers that range comfortably. A full-rise scissor takes the deck higher, up to 60-72 inches, which is useful for full undercarriage inspection but not necessary for shock work specifically. For a first-time home-garage buyer, mid-rise is the honest pick unless you know you’ll be doing frequent full-height inspection. The Urbandale buyer went mid-rise. His garage ceiling was 8-foot-6, which comfortably accommodates a mid-rise but would have gotten tight with a full-rise plus a tall truck on the deck.
Brand comparison — the shortlist we recommend

Model spec comparison — the actual numbers on the quote
The specs a first-time buyer sees on a scissor lift / portable quote are: rated capacity, maximum lift height, minimum lowered height, deck length, deck width, power requirement, weight, and lock-position count. Rated capacity we’ve covered. Maximum lift height on mid-rise portables ranges from 42 to 52 inches. Minimum lowered height is critical for sports cars — some lower to 3.5 inches, others only to 4.5, and that matters if you’re driving a lowered Mustang onto the deck. Deck length ranges from about 60 to 74 inches. Deck width from about 40 to 46. Power is single-phase 110V or 220V for home units. Lock-position count is typically 6-8 notches spread across the lift range. The Urbandale buyer’s Mustang was low; we picked a model with a 3.5-inch minimum lowered height to give him ramp clearance. Small spec, big impact.
What the install actually involved
A scissor lift / portable install for a home garage is not the multi-day job a two-post is. We delivered on a Saturday morning, walked the crate into his garage on a pallet jack, set the deck in position, connected the power unit, added hydraulic fluid, and ran the empty-cycle test. Total install time was under three hours. He watched, asked questions, and by the time we left he had raised his F-150 for the first time himself. No through-anchors. No electrical work beyond plugging into his existing 220V outlet. No slab modifications. First shock replacement and where he is now
His first real job on the scissor lift / portable was a front strut replacement on the F-150. Under jack stands, that job had been a shoulder-burning afternoon. On the lift at the third notch, he did the driver’s side in 45 minutes and the passenger side in 30.
