Why a scissor lift / portable choice fit an RV bay with ten-foot clearance
The Ankeny stall had a rollup door that barely cleared a Class C motorhome. A two-post overhead was a non-starter — the crossbar would hit the roof profile of anything larger than a small sedan. A four-post ate too much floor length. Pit work was out because the original slab dated to the late 1970s and the owner refused to cut it. Ceiling height and door swing — the measurements that matter
People fixate on the raw ceiling number. It is one measurement of three. The first is the finished ceiling height at the lifting deck’s midpoint. The second is any obstruction in the arc a vehicle roof travels through as the deck rises — a truss chord, a light fixture, a ductwork drop. The third is the door swing itself, meaning the height the door track sits at when the door is up. In Ankeny the raw ceiling was ten feet two inches, but the door track when open sat at nine foot four. That number capped how tall a vehicle could be on the deck before its roof kissed the metal. Our recommendation was to position the lift so the deck’s high point sat two feet behind the door, letting a taller rig clear the door before rising. This is the kind of on-site call that separates a good portable scissor purchase from an unhappy first month. We ran the same check on every stall the owner considered before we recommended the corner spot.
Delivery day and getting the lift into place
Delivery came from an LTL freight terminal in Des Moines on a lift-gate truck. We coordinated the drop for a Monday morning so the shop wasn’t losing peak hours. Two of our guys were on-site with a pallet jack, moving blankets, and a shop cart. The crate weighed just under 1,800 pounds with the deck and power unit. We broke it down at the tail of the truck, walked components in one at a time, and had the deck itself on shop wheels within forty minutes. Positioning was the slow part. We rechecked the chalk marks from the walk-through, dry-fit the deck in three spots, and only then set anchors. Because it was a portable-capable design we set floor pucks rather than through-anchoring, which the owner appreciated for future re-arrangement. Hydraulic fluid went in from a fresh five-gallon pail we brought. First raise-and-lower cycles were with the deck empty, then with a shop truck at rated load. From delivery to a certified first lift was under six hours.
First oil change under the deck — what changed and what didn’t
The first real job was a Ford E-450 chassis for one of their regular RV customers. Under the old rolling-jack workflow their tech burned about forty minutes on a full-oil-and-filter service. Under the new scissor lift / portable he did it in twenty-two. The gain wasn’t just working height — it was not having to swap sockets one-handed while lying on his back. Drain access was clean. Filter access was clean. The waste-oil catch cart rolled right under the deck. Small things surprised him. He needed a longer air hose because the deck raised the wrench farther from the reel. He needed a step stool for one particular filter angle. Neither was a complaint. The deck itself, at the second locking notch from the bottom, sat at exactly the height he preferred for chassis work. The tech’s biggest note after week one was that he actually enjoyed the workflow again. The owner noticed his tech was billing more hours cleanly and stopped worrying about the invoice from us.
Small callouts from months three and four
Every lift has a settling-in phase. The Ankeny shop hit theirs around ninety days. First callout was a slow leak at a hose fitting on the power unit — a torque-check issue from delivery, fixed in fifteen minutes on our next parts run. Second was a scuff on one of the deck-approach ramps from a tech backing an axle stand into it; cosmetic, no repair needed. Third was a question about lock-position spacing. The Rotary design in question has locks every two to two and a half inches, which sounds tight until you realize you often want a specific height for one job and a slightly different height for the next. The tech had settled on his two preferred positions and never used the top three. That’s normal for a scissor lift / portable in an oil-change-heavy shop. We offered a quarterly walk-through for the first year at no charge, and the third-month visit turned up nothing else worth writing down.
Where the Ankeny shop sits at the end of year one
Total lifts logged in year one landed just over 1,100 raises. Filters, gaskets, seals — all consumables — replaced on schedule. No warranty claims. The owner told us the honest surprise wasn’t the lift itself but how much the portable option changed his floor plan flexibility. He rearranged the shop twice during year one and moved the lift both times without an installer visit.
