An RV and trailer service shop outside Dubuque took delivery of their first scissor lift / portable last April, and we’ve stayed in close contact through the twelve months since. They came to us because seasonal storage created a specific problem: a customer parks a fifth-wheel or a travel trailer in October, picks it up in April, and in between somebody needs to grease bearings, service brake actuators, and cycle stabilizer jacks. Doing that work with a floor jack on a concrete slab is slow and rough on backs. The shop wanted a way to raise trailers off the ground safely without giving up permanent floor space, and the first-year story is worth telling because it involved slab thickness and rebar decisions most buyer’s guides skip.

Why a scissor lift / portable made sense for seasonal storage
The Dubuque shop had roughly 4,000 square feet under roof and stored between forty and sixty trailers on-site through the Iowa winter. Their existing setup was two floor jacks and a rotation of jack stands, which meant a single tech could work on one trailer at a time and only after twenty minutes of setup. When we walked the shop with the owner, the space constraint was obvious — the storage rows ate most of the floor, and a permanent two-post lift would have eaten a stall he couldn’t afford to give up. A scissor lift / portable let him do the work in whatever stall was free that afternoon, then roll the lift out of the way when a customer came to pick up.
The other factor was vehicle mix. Trailer axles are different from car axles — the tech is usually lifting one corner or one side of a trailer at a time, not the whole rig. A scissor unit with adjustable pad brackets handles that better than a fixed mid-rail lift would. We spec’d him into a 12,000 lb capacity commercial unit with independent pad control so a tech could raise one corner at a time. That flexibility mattered because winterizing tandem-axle trailers means working one wheel end at a time, and the pad control saved a lot of repositioning during the busy fall storage rush.
The slab under the lift: thickness and rebar
Before we delivered the unit we looked at the concrete slab. The shop was built in the mid-1990s with what turned out to be a nominal six-inch slab, wire-mesh reinforced rather than rebar. For a scissor lift / portable, that spec is on the light side of acceptable. Most manufacturers require at least a four-inch pour with rebar or heavy welded wire, cured for at least 28 days. Six inches with wire mesh will hold a rolling scissor at rated load, but the safety margin is thinner than we like, especially with heavier trailers coming through.
We had two choices: install as-is and instruct the shop to keep the lift over specific reinforced sections, or pour a targeted pad in the two working areas he used most. He chose the targeted pour option and had a local concrete crew add two six-by-eight-foot pads at eight inches with #4 rebar on twelve-inch centers. The cost was a couple thousand dollars and it took a weekend. The upside was that we could sign off on the lift installation at full capacity across both work areas, and the shop had confidence he wouldn’t crack the underlying slab under load. The first week in service
First week in service was a shakedown. The tech had to relearn some habits — a scissor doesn’t lift like a floor jack, and the sequence for pad placement is different. On a fifth-wheel trailer, the lifting points are typically the frame rails just inboard of the axles, and getting the pads square to the frame took a few tries. By day four the setup routine was down to about ninety seconds, which was a huge improvement over the old jack-and-stand process. On day six he had his first surprise — a slide-out that had been fine on the ground bound up mid-cycle when the trailer flexed slightly on the pads.
The lesson from that was that scissor lift / portable operators need to know which trailers are stiff enough to lift by the frame and which need pad placement adjusted forward or back to keep the slide-out mechanism from binding. We wrote up a one-page cheat sheet for the shop with the common trailer brands and the recommended pad positions, and they laminated it and hung it on the tool cart. That kind of small documentation matters more than people expect. The manufacturer’s manual won’t cover it, and it’s the kind of hard-won knowledge that keeps techs from breaking parts on customer rigs.
Winter storage: what changes
Winter changed the workflow. When the shop is packed with stored trailers, floor space around the lift is at a premium, and moving the scissor lift / portable through the aisles requires planning. The owner ended up mapping his storage rows so that at least one working aisle stayed open all season, and the lift lived at the end of that aisle. He also learned to schedule maintenance appointments during storage rather than trying to squeeze them into the spring pickup rush. That single scheduling change was probably worth more than the lift itself, in terms of revenue per hour worked.
Cold-weather operation was fine. The hydraulic fluid stayed within spec at temperatures down to about ten degrees Fahrenheit in his unheated section. Below that, we recommend either warming the fluid pack or moving the lift to a heated bay before use. He built a small heater setup for the hydraulic pump specifically for the coldest weeks and hasn’t had a fault since. Iowa winters are hard on any hydraulic equipment, and treating a lift like a piece of equipment rather than a magic box keeps it running for years. We recommend the same fluid warming approach for any of our commercial customers north of Highway 20.
Spring rush: what breaks
Spring rush is when the shop found out what a scissor lift / portable could and couldn’t do. Between March 15 and April 30, they moved sixty-two trailers through inspection and pre-season service. The lift ran an average of six hours a day, and the tech doing the bulk of the work said his back was noticeably less sore at the end of the day than the previous spring. That’s not a technical metric, but for shop owners it’s a real one — the tech who runs a scissor stays healthier through peak season than the tech who bends over a floor jack forty times a day.
Two things broke during spring rush and both were user-fixable. One pad-mount bushing wore prematurely because a tech had been dropping the lift onto the pads too hard at cycle end — that’s operator training, not a defect, and a new bushing was inexpensive. The other was a hydraulic hose that got a small nick from a tool cart rolling by, which we caught on a routine check before it split. Neither issue took the lift out of service for more than an hour. First-year reliability was in the range we expect from a commercial-grade unit, which is to say excellent for the duty cycle.
What the numbers looked like after twelve months
After twelve months the shop’s numbers looked like this — service revenue on stored trailers was up roughly 34 percent year over year, per-trailer service time was down about 40 percent, and the tech who had been threatening to leave over back pain stayed. The scissor lift / portable itself had run somewhere north of 900 cycles based on the counter, and required routine hydraulic fluid checks plus one pad replacement. Uptime was better than 98 percent, which is what commercial-grade equipment should deliver.
The owner told us the single biggest surprise was how much easier it was to sell winter storage now that he could offer full pre-season service as an add-on. Customers who used to skip the maintenance because it was inconvenient now signed up for the package because the shop could do it while the trailer sat in storage. That upsell was worth more revenue than any other change he made all year. Sometimes the value of the right lift isn’t the labor savings, it’s the new services you can offer. We don’t put that in the sales pitch because it depends heavily on your customer mix, but it’s a real effect.
What we would tell the next Dubuque shop
If we were quoting the next Dubuque shop today, the lessons from this install would come up early in the conversation. We would ask about the concrete slab first — not because we sell concrete, but because a scissor lift / portable will punish a marginal slab over time. We would ask about the storage-versus-service seasonality because the workflow implications are enormous. And we would ask about the operator’s training level because the difference between a great first year and a rough first year is usually operator habits, not equipment failures.
We would also spend more time up front on pad accessories. The Dubuque shop ended up buying a second set of tall pads six months in because they took on a customer with lifted overland trailers. Anticipating that at purchase time would have saved a re-order.
