The catch is that most semi lifts capable of handling this kind of weight are mobile column systems or heavy-duty in-ground units, and both come with electrical demands that a typical detached garage circuit was never built for. We’ve seen hobbyists assume that because their welder runs fine on their existing panel, a lift will too. Welders draw hard for short bursts. Lift motors draw steadily under load, sometimes for minutes at a time as columns rise together. Single-Phase vs Three-Phase: What Your Shop Actually Has

Most residential and small farm shop panels in Iowa run single-phase power, typically 240V split-phase service. Plenty of semi lifts, especially mobile column setups designed for smaller fleets and independent shops, are engineered to run on single-phase 220-240V circuits, which is good news if you’re not near a three-phase feed. But some of the larger commercial-grade columns and in-ground platforms are built around three-phase motors because they run more efficiently at higher capacities and hold sync better across multiple columns.

Before you buy, find out what’s actually feeding your shop. Rural properties in southeast Iowa sometimes have three-phase available from ag co-op or grain operation wiring nearby, and sometimes they don’t have it at all. Some mobile column setups excel here because you can position columns exactly where the truck’s frame allows, working around fuel tanks and cross members that a fixed rail system might fight you on. That flexibility matters more for bearing service than for general truck maintenance.
