A car restoration shop owner near the Iowa-Missouri border called us last spring trying to figure out semi lifts for a new bay dedicated to tire rotation and wheel work on customer trucks and the occasional straight truck brought in for bodywork. He’d priced three different systems online and every quote assumed a different budget tier, a different floor, and a different configuration — and none of them matched what he actually had. Step One: What’s Your Real Budget Ceiling?

Every decision tree for semi lifts has to start with an honest budget number, not an aspirational one. Shops along the Iowa-Missouri border tend to fall into three tiers: a stripped-down single-bay setup for occasional heavy truck work, a mid-tier commercial system for regular tire and wheel service on medium-duty trucks, and a full heavy-duty platform built for daily Class 8 work. Trying to buy tier-three equipment on a tier-one budget is how shops end up financing equipment they can’t fully utilize for years.

We ask restoration shop owners a blunt question early: how many heavy trucks are actually coming through your door in a typical month? If it’s occasional — a customer’s dually or the rare straight truck — a mobile column configuration or a single heavy-duty 4-post often makes more financial sense than a full in-ground system. If heavy truck tire work is becoming a real revenue line, the math shifts toward a dedicated commercial platform. Get the honest volume number first, because it drives every downstream decision about semi lifts, install cost, and floor prep.

Step Two: What’s Your Actual Vehicle Mix?

Once budget is set, the next branch is vehicle mix. Restoration shops near the border often work on a wider range of vehicles than a standard truck shop — classic trucks, modified diesels, the occasional medium-duty box truck brought in for panel work — and that mix changes which configuration makes sense. Tire rotation and wheel work specifically needs full wheel-off clearance and enough runway width to accommodate dual rear wheels on many of these trucks.

We’ve seen shops buy semi lifts sized for a single wheelbase, only to discover their actual customer trucks range from a 148-inch wheelbase pickup to a 200-inch straight truck. If your vehicle mix is genuinely variable, a mobile column system gives you the flexibility to adjust axle contact points on the fly rather than being boxed into one fixed runway length. If your mix is more predictable — mostly one or two truck classes — a fixed-rail commercial 4-post is often the more cost-effective choice.

Step Three: What Does Your Slab Actually Support?

This is the branch most shop owners skip, and it’s the one that causes the most expensive surprises. Heavy-duty semi lifts put enormous point loads on anchor bolts, and older slabs — which are common in older restoration shop buildings along the border region — often don’t have the thickness or rebar layout to support those loads without additional work. We generally want to see a minimum slab thickness in the 6 to 8 inch range with properly spaced rebar for a true heavy-duty install, though the exact number depends on the specific lift’s anchor pull-out rating.

Before we finalize any quote, we ask for the age of the slab, whether it was poured for automotive use or repurposed from another type of building, and whether there’s any visible rebar mapping available. If a shop doesn’t know, we recommend a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection before signing anything. We’ve had to walk shops back from a purchase after discovering the existing floor simply wasn’t built to handle a heavy-duty semi lifts install without a new slab section poured first — and that’s a conversation best had before the equipment arrives, not after.

Step Four: Fixed Platform or Mobile Column?

With budget, vehicle mix, and slab capacity known, the configuration question gets much simpler. Fixed 4-post platforms are generally the better value when a shop has consistent floor space dedicated to one bay and a predictable vehicle mix. Mobile column systems cost more per set but offer flexibility — you can service trucks of varying wheelbase without committing floor space permanently to one runway configuration, and columns can be moved between bays as needed.

For a restoration shop doing tire rotation and wheel work across a genuinely mixed fleet, we lean toward recommending mobile columns more often than not, specifically because wheel-off tire work benefits from being able to position each column exactly at the axle rather than working within a fixed rail spacing. It’s a higher upfront cost that often pays for itself in flexibility over a five-year horizon.

Step Five: New Install or Retrofit an Existing Bay?

Shops near the border with existing lift infrastructure sometimes ask whether they can retrofit an old bay rather than build new. The answer depends heavily on what’s already there. If a bay currently has an underpowered 2-post or an aging 4-post rated well below what’s needed for heavy truck work, retrofitting usually means a full teardown anyway, at which point you’re back to evaluating slab capacity and configuration from scratch.

In a few cases we’ve found existing heavy-duty anchoring already in place from a previous tenant’s equipment, which can meaningfully cut install costs on a new semi lifts purchase. It’s always worth having us inspect an existing bay before assuming you need to start from zero — sometimes the expensive part of the job is already done.

Step Six: Install, Training, and Ongoing Parts Support

The last branch in the decision tree is what happens after the lift is bolted down. A heavy-duty install for semi lifts is not a DIY job — proper anchoring, hydraulic line routing, and safety system calibration all need to be done by someone who’s done it before. Parts support matters more with heavy-duty equipment than people expect, because a failed cable or hydraulic seal on a fully loaded semi lift isn’t something you want sitting broken for weeks waiting on a part.
