Most two post and four post lifts use air to release the locking mechanism, not to lift the vehicle itself, but that doesn’t make the air side any less critical. If the locks can’t release cleanly because the line pressure drops when someone fires up a grinder three bays over, you get a lift that hangs up mid-cycle and a tech who starts forcing the release lever, which is exactly how locking pins get bent or sheared. A proper shop air supply lift installation accounts for simultaneous demand, not just the lift sitting there by itself with nothing else running.

We size every shop air supply lift installation around the whole bay, not just the lift. That means factoring in what else pulls air in that space: tire machines, blast cabinets, DA sanders, and impact tools all compete for the same compressor output. A single-bay home garage lift might run fine off a small pancake compressor, but a multi-bay commercial shop running two or three lifts plus tools needs a compressor sized for total simultaneous draw, with some headroom left over.

We generally recommend rotary screw or larger two-stage piston compressors for shops running multiple lifts, tire equipment, and pneumatic tools at once. Undersizing here is the single most common reason a lift installation gets blamed for problems that are really compressor problems. Line Routing and Drop Placement

Where the air line drops matters more than people expect. Overhead drops near each lift column keep hose runs short and out of the way of foot traffic and rolling equipment, and they hold up better over years of shop use than air lines snaked along the floor where they get run over by jack stands and floor jacks.
