Shop equipment relocation is one of the most complex projects an automotive business owner will face. Moving a repair shop is nothing like moving an office — you are not loading desks onto a truck. You are disassembling hydraulic lifts anchored to concrete with 12,000 or more pounds of rated capacity. You are disconnecting alignment machines calibrated to thousandths of an inch. You are decommissioning compressed air systems with hundreds of feet of hardline piping. Every piece of equipment must be properly disassembled, safely transported, correctly reinstalled at the new location, and verified to meet original safety and performance specifications before it goes back into service.

We handle shop equipment relocation from start to finish — site evaluation at the new facility, disassembly and disconnection of all equipment, transport, reinstallation, testing, and certification. We do this because we install and service this equipment every day. We know how it goes together, how it comes apart, and what it takes to make it work correctly in a new location.

Why You Cannot Just Unbolt and Move a Lift

This is the most common misconception about shop equipment relocation. A lift is not a piece of furniture. Removing it from one location and placing it in another involves:

Concrete evaluation at the new location. The lift is only as strong as the concrete it is anchored to. The new floor must meet minimum thickness and compressive strength requirements for the specific lift being installed. A 12,000-pound two-post lift has different concrete requirements than a 30,000-pound four-post alignment lift. If the new floor does not meet specifications, reinforcement or replacement may be required before the lift can be installed.

Anchor installation. Anchors are not reusable in the original holes. At the new location, new anchor holes are drilled, new anchors are set, and proper pull-out strength is verified. Anchor placement must match the lift’s bolt pattern exactly, and the concrete must be evaluated at each anchor point — not just in the general area.

Hydraulic recommissioning. Moving a hydraulic lift means disconnecting and draining the hydraulic system, transporting cylinders and power units without damage, reconnecting everything at the new location, filling with fresh fluid, bleeding the system, and testing pressure, rise time, and drift. Hydraulic systems that are improperly reconnected leak, drift, or fail under load.

Electrical matching. The electrical service at the new location must match the lift’s requirements — voltage, amperage, phase, and circuit protection. A lift wired for 208V three-phase cannot simply be plugged into a 240V single-phase circuit. Motor connections, control wiring, and safety circuits all must be properly terminated and verified.

Recalibration. Equipment that depends on precise calibration — alignment machines, wheel balancers, diagnostic equipment — must be recalibrated after transport. The physical movement, vibration, and handling during transport can shift calibration settings. Equipment that is reinstalled without recalibration produces inaccurate results.

Safety verification. Every relocated lift must pass the same safety inspection as a newly installed lift before it goes into service. Structural integrity, lock function, hydraulic performance, electrical safety, and full operational testing — all verified at the new location. Shop equipment relocation is not complete until every piece of equipment is verified safe and functional.

Equipment We Relocate

Automotive Lifts

Lifts are the most complex and critical items in any shop equipment relocation. We relocate all types:

Two-post lifts. Disassembly of columns, carriages, arms, cables, sheaves, hydraulic power units, and all associated hardware. Overhead beams on clear-floor models add structural components. Two-post lifts are particularly sensitive to anchor quality at the new location — the entire vehicle load concentrates on two columns.

Four-post lifts. Larger footprint, heavier components, but typically simpler anchorage. Runway sections, cross members, jacking beams (if equipped), power units, and electrical systems. Four-post lifts are heavy — transport requires appropriate equipment and vehicle capacity.

Scissor lifts. In-ground scissor lifts require excavation at both the old and new locations — removal from the existing pit, preparation of a new pit to specification, and reinstallation. Surface-mount scissor lifts are more straightforward but still require concrete evaluation and proper anchoring.

In-ground lifts. The most complex relocation scenario. In-ground lifts are installed in concrete pits or sleeves. Removal may involve cutting concrete, extracting cylinders, and restoring the floor at the old location. Installation at the new location requires pit preparation to exact specifications.

Alignment lifts. Alignment lifts with built-in turn plates and slip plates require precise leveling after installation. The alignment system must be recalibrated to the lift’s installed geometry. This is not a generic alignment calibration — it is a full system setup specific to the lift’s position.

Alignment Machines

Alignment machines — whether camera-based, sensor-based, or hybrid systems — must be recalibrated after any relocation. The machines reference their physical position and the lift geometry they are paired with. Moving either the machine or the lift requires recalibration of the system.

Tire Equipment

Tire changers and wheel balancers are relatively portable compared to lifts, but they still require proper disconnection, careful transport (especially the balancer’s precision spindle), and reinstallation with appropriate electrical connections and leveling.

Air Compressor Systems

Relocating a compressed air system is a project unto itself:

  • Compressor unit disconnection (electrical, plumbing, ventilation)
  • Air dryer and filtration equipment removal
  • Hard-piped distribution system evaluation (copper, aluminum, or steel piping is usually not worth moving — new piping at the new location is more practical and cost-effective)
  • Compressor reinstallation at the new location with proper ventilation, drainage, electrical service, and piping connections
  • System testing and leak verification after installation

Fluid Systems

Waste oil systems, coolant recyclers, transmission fluid dispensers, and other fluid handling equipment require proper draining, disconnection, transport, and recommissioning at the new location. Environmental compliance for fluid handling systems varies by jurisdiction.

Exhaust Extraction Systems

Overhead or under-floor exhaust extraction systems involve fans, ductwork, hose drops, and nozzles. Ductwork is usually not worth moving — it is custom-fit to the building. Fans and hose drops may be relocatable. The new facility needs an exhaust system designed for its specific layout.

Common Relocation Scenarios

Moving to a larger facility. The most common scenario. The shop has outgrown its current space and is moving to a larger building. This is the ideal situation for shop equipment relocation because the new facility typically has the space and infrastructure to accommodate the existing equipment plus room for expansion.

Dealership renovation. Dealerships undergoing facility renovations often need to relocate equipment temporarily or permanently within the same building, or move to a temporary location during construction. Phased relocation minimizes downtime — move half the bays, keep the other half operational, then switch.

Building purchase. A shop owner buys a building and wants to move their existing equipment from a leased location. This often comes with a tight timeline driven by lease expiration, making advance planning critical.

Lease expiration or rent increase. When the lease is up or the rent goes beyond what the business can sustain, the shop moves. These relocations are often on a fixed timeline — the equipment must be out by a specific date.

Business acquisition. Buying a shop and consolidating equipment from two locations into one. This may involve selecting the best equipment from both facilities and decommissioning the rest.

Planning Your Shop Equipment Relocation

Timeline

Plan four to eight weeks minimum from the decision to move to the actual move date. Complex relocations — multiple lifts, in-ground equipment, compressed air systems — may need longer. The timeline includes:

  • Week 1-2: Site evaluation at the new location (concrete, electrical, ceiling height, bay dimensions, ventilation)
  • Week 2-3: Equipment inventory and move plan (what moves, what stays, what gets replaced)
  • Week 3-4: Permits and inspections at the new location (building permits for lift installation, electrical permits, plumbing permits for fluid systems)
  • Week 4-6: Phased disassembly and transport
  • Week 6-8: Reinstallation, testing, and certification

What to Move vs. What to Replace

Not every piece of equipment is worth relocating. The cost of disassembly, transport, and reinstallation may exceed the value of the equipment — particularly for older lifts. A shop equipment relocation is the right time to evaluate every piece of equipment honestly:

  • Move it if the equipment is in good condition, has useful service life remaining, and the relocation cost is reasonable relative to replacement cost
  • Replace it if the equipment is old, worn, near end of life, or if the relocation cost approaches the cost of a new unit. A new lift comes with a warranty, current safety features, and zero accumulated wear

Minimizing Downtime

Downtime during a move costs revenue. Two approaches:

Phased move. Move equipment in stages — relocate half the bays while keeping the other half operational. This extends the total move timeline but maintains partial production throughout. Best for shops that cannot afford a full shutdown.

Full shutdown. Move everything at once. Faster total timeline but zero production during the move. Best for shops with low-volume periods (holiday weeks, planned vacation) that can absorb the downtime.

Insurance During Transport

Equipment in transit needs coverage. Verify with your insurance carrier that your policy covers equipment during disassembly, transport, and reinstallation. If not, arrange transit insurance. We carry our own coverage for equipment in our possession, but you should confirm your own policy as well.

Why Professional Shop Equipment Relocation Matters

Shops that attempt DIY relocation — unbolting lifts themselves, hauling them on flatbed trailers, and reinstalling without proper tools or knowledge — create safety risks and often spend more money fixing problems than they saved by doing it themselves.

A lift reinstalled with improper anchoring is dangerous. A hydraulic system reconnected with air in the lines drifts under load. An alignment machine installed without recalibration produces bad alignments. Electrical connections made without proper verification create fire hazards.
