He runs a small restoration operation out of a converted pole building with a low ceiling, and between straightening frames and setting up front ends on vintage muscle cars, he needed something that would clear his roofline and still give him the wheel access alignment work demands. That conversation turned into a full walk-through of budget, arm configuration, and ceiling height, and it’s the same decision tree we use with any shop weighing a shorter overhead-style two post against a taller commercial unit.

Step one: does your ceiling actually allow a rack-style alignment lift

Alignment shops often assume they need a specialty rack lift with built-in turn plates, but that’s not always true, and it’s rarely the first constraint that matters. For a restoration shop doing front-end alignment on classic cars with manual steering linkages and older suspension geometry, we generally recommend asymmetric arms on a short 2 post car lift because the extra clearance around the front wheels makes it easier to work with tie rod adjusters, camber bolts, and toe-set tools without the column blocking a wrench swing. Symmetric setups aren’t wrong, and plenty of general repair shops prefer them for balance and simplicity, but alignment-focused work benefits from the asymmetric geometry more often than not. At the top of a reasonable budget range for a small independent shop, you’re usually looking at added features like drop-end arms for extra low reach under classic car frames, or a slightly wider column spacing for easier two-person work on wider vintage body styles. We don’t push shops toward the most expensive option by default, because a restoration shop doing occasional alignment work alongside bodywork and mechanical restoration often gets everything it needs from the mid-tier configuration. The right budget tier is the one that matches actual job mix, not the one with the most add-ons.

Step five: drive-through clearance and column spacing for classic bodies

Classic and vintage vehicles often have body dimensions that don’t match modern cars, with longer hoods, different wheelbase proportions, and sometimes wider stances than the compact and midsize vehicles most lifts are speced around. Column spacing on a short 2 post car lift typically runs 116 to 130 inches depending on model, and a restoration shop working on full-size classics should measure their widest project vehicle’s track width against that spacing before ordering.

Drive-through clearance matters too, particularly for shops that back cars in nose-out for alignment work, since exhaust systems, dual pipes, and lowered vintage suspensions can clip a column or arm during positioning if clearance is tight. We recommend restoration shops physically measure their widest and lowest project vehicles rather than relying on modern vehicle assumptions, because a lift that fits a daily-driver fine can be genuinely too narrow for a wide-body classic with aftermarket exhaust. Portable turn plates that sit on top of the lift’s runways or arm platforms work with most short 2 post car lift configurations, but the runway or platform design needs enough flat surface area to seat the plates securely without rocking during adjustment.

We’ll talk through both approaches honestly rather than assuming every shop needs integrated turn-plate compatibility built into the lift itself.

Step seven: installation and long-term support for a small shop

A one or two person restoration shop doesn’t have a service department to fall back on if something goes wrong with the lift six months after purchase, which makes installation quality and ongoing parts support part of the real decision, not an afterthought.
