A collector near Iowa City called us last year with a garage full of vehicles and a simple problem: no way to get any of them up in the air to do real work, especially brake service. The Problem: A Collection with No Way Up

Before the lift, brake service on any car in his collection meant jack stands, a floor jack, and a lot of time on his back on the concrete. That works for one car done occasionally. It does not work when you own six or eight vehicles and want to rotate through brake jobs, fluid checks, and general inspection on a regular schedule. He’d priced a center-mounted two-post lift first, but with several vehicles already parked in the shop, giving up the middle of the floor to a standard lift footprint meant losing his ability to maneuver cars around each other.

A side car lift solved that specific problem. Mounted against the side wall instead of centered in the bay, it left the drive aisle down the middle of the shop clear for moving other vehicles in and out while one sat up in the air getting worked on. Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms: The Decision That Almost Went Wrong

When we first quoted him, the default configuration on the model he liked was symmetric arms — arms of equal length on both sides, which center the vehicle squarely between the columns. That’s the right call for a shop running similar vehicles through the bay repeatedly, since it’s simpler and the swing pattern is predictable every time. But a collector’s garage isn’t a quick-lube bay running the same three sedans all week. His collection spanned a lightweight vintage two-door up through a modern truck, and vehicles with very different wheelbases and door positions don’t always center the same way on symmetric arms.

We walked him through switching to asymmetric arms instead — arms with one pair longer than the other, positioned to swing the vehicle’s weight toward the rear and open up the front door for easier entry and exit, and to better accommodate a range of vehicle lengths and door configurations. For a mixed collection, asymmetric arms adapt better car to car without needing to reposition the lift or fight the door against a support column. It cost slightly more than the symmetric configuration, but for his actual use case — a side car lift serving many different vehicles rather than one repeated model — it was the right call, and he’s told us since that he’d have been frustrated with symmetric arms within the first month.

Install Day: What Actually Happened

His shop had a solid concrete slab and decent ceiling height, so the baseplate install itself went smoothly in a single day. The bigger question going into install day was column placement relative to his existing storage layout — he wanted the lift close enough to the wall to preserve floor space but with enough clearance for the arms to swing fully without clipping a support post or a parked vehicle nearby. We measured swing radius against his specific asymmetric arm length before anchoring anything, which is a step we don’t skip for a collector garage where every square foot is already accounted for.

By the end of the day the lift was anchored, powered, and cycled through a full test run empty before we ever put a vehicle on it. That empty test cycle matters more than people think — it’s the point where you catch a slight column misalignment or a cable that needs adjustment before it’s under load with a car worth real money sitting on the arms. For a collector, that extra half hour of testing before the first real lift is not optional.

The First Service: Brakes and Rotors

The first real job on the new side car lift was a brake and rotor swap on one of his older vehicles, the kind of job he’d been putting off because doing it on jack stands on the shop floor was miserable. With the car up on the lift at a comfortable working height, both front wheels off simultaneously, and full access under the vehicle, the job took a fraction of the time it would have taken on the ground. He mentioned afterward that the visibility alone — being able to actually see the caliper and rotor assembly at eye level instead of crouched under a fender — caught a worn brake line he’d have missed working on the ground.

That’s the case for a side car lift in a collector’s garage that goes beyond convenience: it’s a diagnostic tool as much as a lifting tool. Rotor swaps, caliper inspections, and brake line checks all benefit from proper working height and full underside access, and a collection of older or specialty vehicles often has exactly the kind of wear items — brake lines, suspension bushings, fluid leaks — that are easy to miss without that access.

Living With It: Months Two Through Twelve

After the first brake job, the lift became the default tool for anything beyond a quick fluid top-off. Tire rotations across the collection, more brake work as older cars came up on their service intervals, and even just parking a car up in the air temporarily to free floor space during a garage reorganization — all things he hadn’s have easily managed before. The asymmetric arm choice kept paying off every time a different body style rolled onto the lift, since he never had to fight the same centering compromise twice.

By month six he was doing enough of his own service work that he’d started keeping a small stock of his own parts on hand rather than ordering per job. That’s a natural progression for a collector once a real lift is in the shop — the lift removes the biggest barrier to doing your own service work, and the parts and consumables follow once you’re actually using it regularly.

What We’d Tell Another Collector Considering This
