A four-post lift without a jack is a parking device. Add a bridge jack, and the same lift becomes a real service lift — tires off, brakes off, alignment done. A properly matched sliding jack for 4 post lift is one of the highest-return accessories in any shop, and it is also the one buyers get wrong most often. This guide walks through capacity, air vs hydraulic operation, brand compatibility, and how quickly it earns its keep.

What a sliding jack actually does

A sliding jack (sometimes called a rolling jack or a bridge jack) is a small hydraulic jack that rides on the top rails of your four-post lift’s runways. You push it forward or back along the length of the vehicle, then extend the jack to lift one axle — or both axles, if you have two jacks — off the runways. That takes weight off the wheels and turns a four-post into a wheels-free service lift, which is what you need for tire rotations, brake jobs, and any alignment work that requires suspension unloading.

Capacity: 3,500, 4,500, 6,000, and 7,000 lb

Bridge jacks come in a handful of standard capacities, and the right one depends on the lift capacity, the vehicle weight, and how you split the axle load. Most passenger and light-truck work is fine with a 3,500 to 4,500 lb sliding jack for 4 post lift. Heavier trucks — three-quarter and one-ton pickups, cargo vans, and fleet work — want a 6,000 or 7,000 lb jack. Rule of thumb: your bridge jack should be rated to at least the heaviest single-axle weight you plan to lift, plus a comfortable margin. A jack that is undersized will not necessarily fail immediately, but it will run past its comfort zone every day and it will not pass an inspection.

Air-over-hydraulic vs pure hydraulic

Two designs dominate the sliding jack for 4 post lift market. Air-over-hydraulic bridge jacks use shop air to pressurize a small hydraulic reservoir — you press a pedal or lever and the jack goes up. They are fast, they are consistent, and they need clean shop air with 90 to 175 PSI depending on model. Pure hydraulic (hand-pump) bridge jacks are cheaper, do not need air, and are slower. Most commercial shops go air-over-hydraulic because a tech who is doing eight brake jobs a day is not going to want to hand-pump a jack.

Compatibility across brands and rails

This is where buyers get burned. Not every sliding jack for 4 post lift fits every four-post. The jack rides on rails machined into the top of your runways, and rail width, rail profile, and roller design vary by manufacturer. A Rotary jack does not necessarily fit a Bendpak runway. A Forward jack does not necessarily fit a Challenger runway. Before you buy, get the make and model of your four-post and confirm the jack you are looking at is on the manufacturer’s compatibility list. Stroke and reach

Stroke is how far the jack rises off the runways. Most bridge jacks give you 8 to 16 inches of stroke. On a mid-rise or short four-post, more stroke is better because it lets you clear the tire fully with the runway still low. Reach is how far the jack slides forward and back along the length of the runways. A short-reach jack cannot service both front and rear axles from one setup; a long-reach jack can. If you plan to run one bridge jack and move it, buy long reach. If you plan to run two bridge jacks (one for each axle), reach matters less.

Contact adapters and safety

The pad on top of the jack is not one-size-fits-all. Frame stands and adapter stacks come with any decent bridge jack, and you want them — unibody cars, body-on-frame trucks, and EVs with battery-tray pinch points all need different contact points. Also, every legitimate bridge jack has a mechanical lock ladder. Once the jack picks a load, you lower it onto its own lock before you touch the vehicle. If a bridge jack does not have a working lock ladder, that is a walk-away.

The tire and brake math

Here is why a sliding jack for 4 post lift pays back so fast. A brake job on a four-wheel-drive pickup takes a tech 90 minutes on a four-post with a jack, and closer to 150 minutes on a two-post because the tech is fighting undercarriage geometry the whole time. A tire rotation takes 15 minutes on a four-post-with-jack setup, versus 25 to 30 on a two-post. Over a year, that time savings pays for the jack multiple times. Add wheel alignment on the same lift and the ROI is genuinely aggressive.

Air line and installation

Every air-over-hydraulic bridge jack needs an air feed. A good install includes a dedicated air line run down one column of the four-post, with a proper filter-regulator and a self-storing coiled hose out to the jack. Do not run the jack off a dangling drop line from the ceiling; techs will trip on it and the line will get pinched. Buying it right the first time

Match capacity to your heaviest single-axle load. Pick air-over-hydraulic unless you literally have no shop air. Confirm rail compatibility with your specific four-post model. Buy the correct adapter kit for your vehicle mix. Run a proper air line. Do those five things and your sliding jack for 4 post lift will do everything a real service lift can do, on a lift that is otherwise easier to load, easier to work under, and cheaper than a matched-column two-post.
