We’ve walked into a lot of Iowa garages that bought good equipment but never planned the small fleet garage layout around how vehicles, tools, and people actually move through the building. Start With the Building, Not the Lift

Every small fleet garage layout has to start with hard measurements before anyone picks a lift model. We measure clear ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, light fixtures — because a two-post lift that needs 12 feet of clearance is useless in a bay with a 10-foot drop from a beam. We also map column spacing in pre-engineered steel buildings, since support columns often land right where a lift or a vehicle needs to sit. Door width and height matter just as much; a fleet running full-size 3/4-ton pickups with toolboxes and ladder racks needs taller, wider overhead doors than most garages come with standard.

We also look at floor slab thickness and condition before anchoring anything. A cracked or thin slab won’t hold anchor bolts under load, and that’s not something you find out after the lift is installed.
