If you run two half-ton pickups now but plan to add a one-ton dually or a box van, buy lift capacity and bay width for that future truck, not the current one. It’s far cheaper to size up on day one than to retrofit a shop two years in.
We usually ask fleet owners to list every vehicle they own plus every vehicle they realistically expect to add, then find the heaviest and widest one in that list. That vehicle sets your minimum lift capacity and your minimum ceiling height if you’re considering a two-post. For most small fleets running pickups and vans, a capacity in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range covers nearly everything, but a few operators running box trucks or larger service vehicles need to look at heavier-duty commercial lifts instead of home-garage-grade equipment. Two-Post vs Four-Post for Fleet Work

Four-post lifts earn their place when the shop also needs to store a vehicle off the floor, do alignments, or roll a vehicle onto the lift without needing to position the arms under specific lift points every time — handy if multiple people with different skill levels are using the shop. Floor thickness and condition matter just as much. A concrete slab under a two-post lift needs to meet minimum thickness and cure-time specs from the manufacturer, and older home shop slabs sometimes don’t qualify without reinforcement. We check slab specs on every install because a lift anchored into thin or cracked concrete is a liability, not a convenience.
