We get this question constantly from European-marque specialty shops: is a symmetric vs asymmetric car lift the same thing as choosing between an overhead and a baseplate configuration? It isn’t, and mixing up those two separate decisions leads to a lot of confused equipment shopping. We work with a specialty import shop near Iowa City that does nothing but BMW, Audi, and Mercedes tire rotation and wheel work all day, and their service writer called us convinced they needed a baseplate lift specifically because a competitor’s sales rep told them symmetric arms only came on overhead models. Myth One: Symmetric vs Asymmetric Car Lift Is the Same Question as Overhead vs Baseplate

This is the myth we hear most often, and it’s an easy one to fall into because both decisions get made at the same time when you’re buying a 2-post lift. They are, however, completely independent choices. Overhead versus baseplate describes where the structural support beam sits — overhead lifts have a beam connecting the tops of the columns, while baseplate lifts route that structural support through the floor via a base plate, leaving the overhead area completely open. Symmetric versus asymmetric describes the arm geometry and how the vehicle sits relative to the columns.

You can absolutely get a baseplate lift with symmetric arms, an overhead lift with asymmetric arms, or any other combination the manufacturer offers. Myth Two: Overhead Lifts Are Always Better for Tire and Wheel Shops

There’s a persistent idea that overhead lifts are the “professional” choice and baseplate is a budget compromise, and for a European specialty shop doing high volume tire rotation and wheel work, this myth causes real confusion. The truth is more nuanced. Overhead lifts do offer a structurally simpler, often lower-cost path to higher lifting capacities because the overhead beam handles a lot of the load-bearing work. Baseplate lifts, by contrast, have no overhead obstruction at all, which matters if your shop occasionally lifts taller SUVs, vans, or anything with a roof-mounted accessory. For pure tire and wheel work on sedans and mid-size SUVs — the bread and butter of most import specialty shops — either configuration handles the job fine, and the real decision driver is ceiling height and floor condition rather than some inherent quality difference. Where we do sometimes recommend symmetric arms for a specialty shop is when the vehicle mix includes low, wide performance cars where centered positioning genuinely helps with clearance around ground-effects or aero components. What Overhead vs Baseplate Actually Means for an Iowa City Shop’s Floor
