We’ve walked into dozens of shops across Iowa where the equipment showed up before the power did, and it always turns into a scramble. Why Shops End Up Needing Three Phase Power

Most shops start out on single phase because that’s what’s already run to the building, and honestly, plenty of equipment runs fine on it. But once you start adding heavier hydraulic pumps, larger compressors, or multiple pieces of equipment running at once, single phase motors start pulling more amperage to do the same job. That means bigger breakers, bigger wire, and sometimes a service upgrade just to keep the lights from flickering every time a lift cycles.

A three phase shop conversion solves this because three phase motors are more efficient, run smoother, and draw less current for the same horsepower. We see this most with shops running multiple in-ground lifts, heavy-duty four post alignment racks, or larger rotary two-post units in the 12,000 lb and up range. If you’re a fleet shop, a dealership service department, or anyone running several bays at once, the math almost always favors making the switch sooner rather than later. We’ve had customers put off a three phase shop conversion for years and then finally do it after tripping breakers one too many times during a busy week.

What a Three Phase Shop Conversion Actually Involves

The first question we always ask is whether three phase power is even available at the property line. In a lot of rural Iowa areas, it isn’t, which means the utility company has to run new service, and that can be the most expensive part of the whole project. In town, it’s often just a matter of your electrician coordinating with the utility to bring three phase into the panel and then running new circuits to your equipment.

From there, a licensed electrician handles the panel work, conduit, and wiring, while we handle making sure the lift or equipment itself is spec’d correctly for the new power. We’ve seen shops assume any three phase equipment will just work once power is available, but voltage matters too — 208V, 230V, and 460V three phase are not interchangeable, and the motor on your lift or lathe has to match what’s actually coming into the building. This is one of the most common mistakes we catch during a three phase shop conversion, and it’s a lot cheaper to catch before the wiring goes in than after.

Rotary Phase Converters as a Middle Ground

Not every shop can justify a full three phase shop conversion, especially if you’re only running one or two pieces of three phase equipment. In those cases, a rotary phase converter can generate usable three phase power from your existing single phase service. It’s not free power — you still need enough single phase capacity to feed the converter — but it’s often far cheaper than a full utility upgrade, especially out in areas where three phase isn’t run to the property at all.

We install and recommend rotary phase converters fairly often for smaller independent shops and home garage setups that want a single commercial-grade lift or a larger air compressor without paying for a full three phase shop conversion. The tradeoff is that converters need to be sized correctly for the starting load of your equipment, not just the running load, because motors pull a big surge of current the instant they start. Undersize the converter and you’ll trip it constantly; oversize it and you’re paying for capacity you don’t need. Cost Factors That Actually Drive the Price

Every three phase shop conversion is priced differently depending on a handful of factors: distance from the nearest three phase utility line, whether your panel needs a full upgrade or just new circuits, how many pieces of equipment need to be tied in, and whether you’re going the full utility route or using a phase converter instead. Rural properties tend to see the highest costs because running new utility service can mean significant trenching or pole work.

We always tell Iowa shop owners to get quotes from a licensed electrician and the local utility before committing to equipment that requires three phase power, because it’s much easier to plan a purchase around your electrical reality than to buy first and figure out power second. Not every electrician has done a three phase shop conversion for an automotive facility, and the details matter — lift control boxes, hydraulic pump motors, and compressor starters all have their own quirks.
