The blade does not generate full force — it pushes against the bead and stalls before breaking it free, especially on corroded truck and winter-service rims. The machine makes the hydraulic pump noise but the blade barely moves. You see hydraulic fluid weeping around the cylinder shaft or pooling under the machine.
What the repair looks like:
Bead breaker seal replacement is a mechanical repair, not a replacement of the entire cylinder in most cases. The cylinder is removed, disassembled, old seals and backup rings are pulled, cylinder bore is inspected for scoring (a scored bore will chew through new seals quickly), new seal kit is installed, and the cylinder is reassembled and bled. On most tire changers, this is a half-day repair including testing.
If the cylinder bore is scored, the cylinder either needs to be honed (if the scoring is minor) or replaced entirely. The wheel shifts or rotates during mounting — the jaws cannot maintain grip. You hear a clunking or slipping sound when the turntable rotates under load. Metal jaw surfaces become exposed where the pads have worn through, causing scratches on wheel lips. The clamping mechanism reaches its maximum travel but still does not hold the wheel securely.
What the repair looks like:
Jaw pad replacement is one of the simplest tire machine repairs. The old pads are pulled or unbolted from the jaw bodies, new pads are installed, and jaw adjustment is verified for clamping range and centering. The entire job takes under an hour on most machines.
The jaw bodies themselves rarely need replacement unless they are bent from clamping an oversized wheel that exceeded the machine’s range. If the jaw body is bent, it will not center the wheel properly even with new pads, and the body needs to be replaced or straightened.

Hydraulic Table Drift
On tire changers with hydraulic clamping tables — the table rises and falls hydraulically to position the wheel at the correct working height — a common failure mode is table drift. The table slowly sinks under the weight of the wheel and tire during the mount/demount cycle.
What causes it:
Internal bypass in the hydraulic cylinder that holds the table at height. Fluid passes the piston seal instead of being held by it, and the table drops slowly. A worn or contaminated hydraulic control valve that does not fully seat when the table is supposed to hold position. Low hydraulic fluid level from a slow external leak.
What the repair looks like:
Table drift from cylinder seal wear gets the same treatment as bead breaker seal repair — cylinder disassembly, seal replacement, bore inspection, reassembly. If the drift is valve-related, the control valve is cleaned, rebuilt, or replaced depending on the valve design and the severity of the contamination.
Why it matters: Table drift during a tire change means the wheel moves during the cycle. The operator constantly readjusts, which slows every job and increases the risk of the head catching on the wheel rim at the wrong angle. Shops that live with table drift for months accumulate subtle wheel damage and lost productivity that adds up to far more than the repair cost.
Control Board and Electrical Issues
Modern tire changers — especially those with leverless heads, WalkAway automation, and power-assist features — use electronic control boards to sequence operations. When the control board fails or develops faults, the symptoms can be confusing because they mimic mechanical problems.
Symptoms:
Functions activate in the wrong sequence or fail to activate at all. The machine powers on but does not respond to foot pedal or button commands. Error codes appear on the display (if the machine has one). Functions work intermittently — the bead breaker fires sometimes but not others, despite no change in the tire being serviced.
Diagnosis and repair:
