Myth #1: A Leaking Truck Hoist Lift Always Needs a New Cylinder

This is the most expensive myth we run into. When a hoist drops down by itself overnight or during a shift, most shop owners assume the cylinder is toast and start pricing a full replacement. In our experience, the majority of drift and leak-down complaints trace back to worn seals inside an otherwise perfectly good cylinder, not a cracked or scored cylinder wall that actually requires replacement.

We recently worked a case where a shop had two hoists down — one leaking from the handle used to lower the lift, and a separate unit where a cable pulley wheel had seized. Neither needed a new cylinder. The leaking handle assembly needed a seal kit and a cleaned-up valve body; the seized pulley needed lubrication and a bearing check. Rebuild kits for most Rotary and Challenger cylinders run a fraction of a full replacement cylinder’s cost, and in the majority of cases they fully resolve drift, leak-down, and slow-lowering complaints. Myth #2: All Seal Kits Are Interchangeable Across Brands

Diagnosing Before You Order Parts
