A farm shop owner outside a small northwest Iowa town called us mid-build, standing in a pole building with fresh concrete and no idea yet where the lift should go. He was tired of crawling under a 3/4-ton diesel to change differential fluid on gravel and a creeper, and he wanted a truck lift for shop use before winter. The problem was the electrical rough-in was already done and nobody had asked what the lift needed. That call is the reason we put together this checklist — because the order you make decisions in matters just as much as which lift you eventually buy.

Step 1: Nail Down Your Heaviest Vehicle First

Before you look at a single lift model, write down the actual curb weight of the heaviest vehicle you’ll regularly service, then add realistic weight for tools, fuel, and any permanent equipment. A 3-ton diesel dually with a job box and full toolboxes can weigh considerably more than the base spec sheet suggests, and that’s the number that should drive your tonnage decision, not the average vehicle in your shed. We’ve talked to farm shop owners who assumed a 10,000-lb lift would cover them because that’s what everyone recommends, only to realize their actual daily driver pushes closer to 12,000-14,000 lbs once loaded.

This matters more for differential and driveline work than most other service types, because you’re often working with the vehicle at full ride height and full weight rather than stripped down. If your shop handles anything in the 1-ton-and-up range, ag trucks, or grain trucks on occasion, size the lift for that worst case, not the convenient case. Getting this number right before you shop saves you from buying a lift that technically lifts the truck but leaves no margin for error, which matters when you’re underneath it changing fluid.

Step 2: Confirm Your Slab Before You Order Anything

A lift is only as good as the concrete it’s anchored into, and this is the step that gets skipped most often in new farm shop builds. Baseplate two-post lifts and four-post lifts both need a slab of adequate thickness and cure time, and older or thinner pours common in older outbuildings sometimes can’t support anchor bolts rated for a heavy-duty lift without additional reinforcement. If your northwest Iowa shop has a slab poured within the last few weeks, it likely hasn’t cured long enough for anchoring yet regardless of how solid it looks.

We ask for slab thickness, rebar or mesh reinforcement, and cure date before we ever quote installation, because guessing here leads to lifts that shift, settle, or fail anchor pull tests during install. If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for this project, tell your concrete contractor up front that it needs to support a truck lift for shop use — that changes thickness and reinforcement specs compared to a standard garage floor pour. Getting this step wrong after the fact means jackhammering out a section of slab, which is a cost and delay nobody wants mid-build.

Step 3: Sequence Your Build Around the Lift, Not After It

Electrical, lighting, and door placement all need to account for lift columns and overhead clearance, and this is where the northwest Iowa shop owner we mentioned earlier ran into trouble. His electrician had already roughed in outlets and overhead lighting before the lift location was finalized, which meant relocating a circuit and adjusting a light fixture that would have collided with the lift’s crossbeam. Sequencing the lift decision before the electrical rough-in avoids this entirely.

The same logic applies to overhead doors and ceiling height. A two-post overhead lift needs clearance for the crossbeam plus the tallest vehicle you’ll lift, and in a pole building with lower trusses that clearance might not exist without repositioning the lift or choosing a baseplate configuration instead. We recommend farm shop builders finalize lift make, model, and placement before finishing walls, running electrical, or hanging doors — even if that means pausing the build for a week to get a quote and layout confirmed. It’s a small delay against the cost of reworking finished electrical or a door that won’t clear a raised vehicle.

Step 4: Budget for Install, Not Just the Lift

Farm shop owners often budget for the lift itself and treat installation as an afterthought, but for heavy-duty two-post and four-post lifts, install is a real line item that includes anchoring, leveling, electrical connection, and calibration. Rural sites sometimes add cost here too — travel distance for install crews, or limited local access to a crane or forklift for unloading a heavy lift crate. When farm shop owners tell us they’re targeting a budget under a certain number for the whole project, we walk through lift cost plus install cost plus any site-specific factors so the number is realistic before they commit.

Storage-focused four-post lifts on casters, which we see requested often for farm shops that want to park equipment above a truck being serviced below, add another wrinkle — caster kits and locking mechanisms need to be specified up front since they affect footprint and anchoring requirements. If your shop plans to move the lift or reconfigure the space seasonally, say so during the quote stage. Retrofitting casters or changing anchor points after installation costs more than specifying it correctly the first time.

Step 5: Plan for the Access You Actually Need

Differential service and other underbody work benefits from more than just raising the truck — it benefits from a lift height and configuration that lets you stand comfortably rather than crouch. If your primary use case is driveline and differential work, look at maximum rise height and clear-floor working room specifically, not just the tonnage rating. A lift that raises a truck high enough to walk under upright, rather than duck under, changes how much fatigue and time a differential job takes over a full day of farm shop work.

This also affects arm and pad configuration. Underbody work on a truck with a service body or auxiliary tank needs pickup points that clear those attachments, which not every generic truck adapter accommodates. We spec truck pads and adapter kits based on the actual vehicles in your fleet, since generic kits sometimes miss contact points on trucks with aftermarket bumpers, sliders, or fuel tanks common in ag use. Getting this right before you buy avoids discovering mid-job that your arms can’t reach a clean pickup point.

Step 6: Decide Between Two-Post and Four-Post for Your Use Case

Farm shops asking about a truck lift for shop use often assume two-post is the default, but four-post lifts on casters serve a different purpose worth considering, especially if storage and service happen in the same bay. A four-post gives you a stable platform to park a truck or piece of equipment above while you work below on something else, and casters let you reposition it seasonally as shop needs change between planting, harvest, and winter maintenance season.

Two-post lifts, by contrast, give better underbody access for differential and driveline work since there’s no deck or ramp blocking your path to the drivetrain. If your primary need is working underneath a vehicle regularly, two-post is usually the better fit. If you’re splitting time between storage and occasional service, a caster-mounted four-post might solve both problems in one purchase. We walk through this tradeoff with every farm shop caller because the two configurations solve genuinely different problems, and picking based on price alone often leads to buying the wrong one.

Step 7: Finalize the Quote With Everything Included

The last step before you buy is making sure your quote includes the lift, the correct arm or pad configuration for your vehicles, any caster or storage accessories, and full installation — not a partial number that looks good until extras get added later.
