Myth #1: Any 10,000 lb Lift Handles Any Truck

The single biggest mistake we see European specialty shops make when researching truck lifts for shops is assuming weight capacity is the whole story. A 10,000 lb two-post rating tells you almost nothing about whether the arms will reach under a 3/4-ton pickup with aftermarket rocker guards, or whether the lift’s frame-engagement pads will even contact factory pinch points on a lowered A4 sitting three inches off the ground. If your shop genuinely needs to serve both vehicle types well, ask for the reach and height specs in writing before you compare price. Myth #2: A Two-Post Lift Is Automatically Fine for Alignment Work

Plenty of shops assume any two-post lift doubles as an alignment rack once you throw turn plates under the front tires. It doesn’t, at least not reliably. Alignment work depends on a flat, unmoving reference plane and precise wheel-clamp access, and most standard two-post lifts weren’t engineered with that tolerance in mind, especially once you add the taller carriage height needed to walk upright under a full-size truck. The arms can also block turn-plate access on shorter European sedans, forcing techs to work around obstructions they wouldn’t have with a dedicated setup.

Myth #3: Bigger Rise Height Is Always Better

The better question is what rise height gets your techs comfortably upright under the tallest vehicle you actually service, not the tallest vehicle you can imagine servicing. Measure your tallest regular customer vehicle, add clearance for a lift kit if you see those often, and size to that number instead of chasing the biggest spec sheet.

Myth #4: All Frame-Engaging Pads Work the Same on Trucks and Cars

Adapter pads and frame-engaging accessories get treated as an afterthought, but this is where European-marque shops run into the most day-to-day friction. Trucks need wider, taller adapters to reach factory lift points below rocker panels and skid plates, while lower European sedans and wagons need shorter, more precise pads to avoid crushing rocker trim or hitting exhaust components. Using the same generic pad set for both vehicle types usually means somebody is improvising with wood blocks, which is a liability nobody should accept.

When you’re speccing truck lifts for shops that serve a mixed fleet, order a second set of adapters sized specifically for your lower vehicles rather than trying to make one set stretch across everything you service. A shop that’s been fine with sedans for years can discover during a truck lift installation that the same bay footprint that worked for cars creates a tight squeeze for a full-size pickup’s turning radius.

The lowest-priced option on a spec sheet often looks like the responsible choice, especially for a shop watching margins on both truck and European work. But cheaper lift models frequently cut corners on cylinder quality, cable durability, and arm reach range, all of which show up as downtime and repair costs within a few years. A lift that’s down for a week waiting on parts costs a specialty shop far more than the price difference ever saved.
