For a shop doing mostly shocks, struts, control arms, and sway bar work, a 2-post asymmetric lift is usually the better tool. The arms swing out of the way so you get full access to the wheels and the undercarriage at the same time, which matters when you’re pulling a spring compressor into a wheel well or dropping a lower control arm. Most of the trucks we see in central Iowa shops run in the 7,000 to 10,000 pound range unloaded, and a properly rated 10,000 lb 2-post handles that with room to spare, even with a job box or tool boxes still mounted in the bed.

Drive-on decks are self-supporting once the truck is parked, so there’s less reliance on a single hydraulic cylinder holding the full load, and most 4-post platforms let you drop rolling jacks in to pull wheels off entirely for suspension teardown. We’ve set these up in shops doing exactly this kind of work, where the tech drives a truck up, locks the deck, then lowers a jack underneath to do a full front end rebuild without ever touching a floor jack.

The downside is footprint and price. A 30×40 pole building shop with 12-foot sidewalls, which is a layout we see constantly in central Iowa, can usually fit one 4-post comfortably but will feel cramped with two. If your shop is doing high volume shock and strut work with quick in-and-out jobs, the 2-post setup will usually move more vehicles per day. Cylinder Seal Wear and What Drives It in Truck Bays

Trucks are harder on lift cylinders than passenger cars for a simple reason: they’re heavier, and shops running suspension work tend to cycle the lift up and down more often per job than a typical oil change bay. Every full-height and half-height cycle pushes hydraulic fluid past the seal, and grit tracked in from a gravel lot or unpaved yard accelerates wear on the cylinder wall itself.
