The First Call: What We Actually Need to Know

Every install starts the same way for us — not with a price quote, but with a list of questions. When shop owners call asking about truck lifts for shops, we want to know the vehicle weight range first. A half-ton pickup with no job box is a very different animal than a one-ton dually loaded with tools and equipment. We also ask about ceiling height right away, because a 10,000 lb two-post lift and a 12,000 lb model can have meaningfully different rise heights, and that jump in capacity often comes with a jump in price that isn’t necessary if the lighter lift covers what you’re actually driving onto it.

In this case, the owner was clear from the start: primarily pickups, no permanently mounted job boxes, occasional heavier farm equipment. That conversation alone saved him from overspending on a 12,000 lb unit when a 10,000 lb two-post lift with the right rise height did the job. We always tell people it’s easier to have this conversation on the phone before a truck shows up at your shop than after a lift is already bolted to the floor.

Site Survey: Measuring the Building, Not Just the Floor

Once we had a sense of the vehicles, we scheduled an on-site visit. A 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls sounds like plenty of room until you start accounting for lift height, safety clearance, and the space a technician needs to stand comfortably. We measured wall height, checked for any overhead obstructions like light fixtures or ductwork, and confirmed the concrete floor thickness and cure time. Concrete matters more than most people realize — lifts installed on flooring that’s too thin or too green for anchoring can eventually shift or fail to hold anchor bolts properly.

We also walked the floor plan to figure out traffic flow. If you’re storing one vehicle on the lift and parking another beneath it, you need enough clear floor space to open doors, walk around, and still get a second vehicle in and out without playing a parking puzzle every morning. This is a step we never skip, because it’s the difference between a shop that flows well and one where the lift ends up being an obstacle instead of a tool.

Choosing Between Two-Post and Four-Post for This Shop

For this particular northwest Iowa install, we landed on a two-post configuration because the owner wanted full underbody access for maintenance work — brakes, exhaust, suspension. Four-post lifts are excellent for storage and alignment work, but they don’t give you the same open access underneath a vehicle. Since this shop’s main use case was maintenance rather than pure storage, a two-post lift made more sense even though storage was also part of the plan.

We talked through the rise height carefully too. The owner mentioned wanting to walk under a vehicle without crouching, which pushed us toward a taller lift with adequate rise rather than the shortest, cheapest option on the list. Concrete prep is just as important. We check slab thickness, look for cracks near the planned footprint, and confirm cure time if the floor is newly poured. For this shop, the floor had cured well past the minimum window, which let us move straight to layout and anchoring without delays. Getting these two things — power and concrete — squared away before our install crew arrives is what keeps a job on schedule instead of turning into a half-day of waiting around.

Install Day: What Actually Happens

On install day, our crew laid out the anchor pattern, leveled the columns, and ran the hydraulic and safety cable connections according to the lift’s specifications. For a shop converting from open floor space to a working bay, we also walk the owner through clearance zones — where not to park, where the safety locks engage, and how much room the arms need at full swing. It’s a practical walkthrough, not just a technical one, because the owner is the one operating this equipment every day going forward.

We tested the lift empty first, then ran it through a load cycle with an actual pickup before calling the job done. That step catches issues before they become someone’s Monday morning problem.
