Every time a technician drives a car onto the rack, the full weight of the front axle rolls across those steel bearings and slip plates, and every time a wheel gets turned lock to lock for a toe adjustment, the plate has to rotate smoothly under that same load. Add in Iowa’s grit, road salt, and shop dust tracked in on tires all winter, and you’ve got an environment that grinds away at bearing surfaces far quicker than a shop owner expects.

Most turnplates are rated for a specific number of duty cycles, but very few shops track that number, so the first sign of trouble is usually binding, a grinding feel, or a plate that won’t return to center on its own. That’s exactly the point where a proper turnplate rebuild guide pays for itself, because catching the wear early means you’re replacing bearings and races instead of buying an entirely new turnplate assembly. At minimum you’ll want a full bearing and race kit matched to your specific lift model, replacement locking pin and bushing, thread-locking compound, a good degreaser, and marine-grade or extreme-pressure bearing grease rated for high load and low speed rotation.

Step-by-Step Teardown and Cleaning

Start by removing the locking pin and any retaining hardware around the perimeter of the top plate, then carefully pry the plate free from the base housing, keeping track of orientation since most turnplates are directional. Once separated, you’ll expose the bearing race and rolling elements — set these aside on a clean rag so you’re not reintroducing grit while you work.

Degrease every surface of the base housing and the underside of the top plate thoroughly, checking for pitting, corrosion, or scoring in the race groove itself. Minor surface rust can sometimes be worked out with fine abrasive pads, but any deep pitting means the race needs replacing along with the bearings, not just the bearings alone. Inspect the locking pin bore for elongation too, since a sloppy bore will let the plate walk even with a brand-new pin installed.

Reassembly, Regreasing, and Calibration

Reassembly is where most botched turnplate rebuilds happen, usually from under-greasing or misaligning the new race. Pack the new bearing race generously with the correct high-load grease, seat the bearings evenly around the race, and lower the top plate back into place slowly, checking that it seats flush and rotates without any high spots before you fasten anything down.

Once it’s together, cycle the plate through a full range of motion by hand several times to work the grease in and confirm smooth rotation before reinstalling the locking pin and degree scale. This is also the moment to recalibrate the zero point on the degree scale against the pointer, since a plate that’s mechanically perfect but reading a few degrees off will still hand your techs bad alignment numbers. Torque all fasteners to the manufacturer’s spec rather than just snugging them down, because under-torqued hardware is one of the most common causes of turnplates working loose again within a few months of a rebuild.

When a Rebuild Isn’t Enough

Sometimes the honest answer at the end of a turnplate rebuild guide is that the plate is past saving. If the base housing itself is cracked, warped, or the mounting bolts have stripped out the surrounding metal, no amount of new bearings will fix the underlying structural problem. Heavily worn units that have been run dry for years sometimes have race grooves worn so deep and uneven that a new bearing set won’t seat properly no matter how carefully you install it.
