Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Two Post Arm Designs
The oldest split in two post arm designs is symmetric versus asymmetric. Symmetric arms extend the same distance front and back on both columns, which used to be common decades ago but has mostly fallen out of favor for general service work. The problem is door swing and balance — with the vehicle centered evenly between the columns, doors on longer cars often can’t open fully, and the weight distribution doesn’t always match how the vehicle actually sits.
Asymmetric arm designs shift the vehicle forward and offset from center, typically around 30/70, so the front columns clear the doors and the technician can stand and work without the column in the way. Most Rotary and Challenger two post lifts sold today use asymmetric arm geometry as the default because it matches how modern vehicles are built and how techs actually move around a bay. If you’re outfitting a general repair shop, asymmetric two post arm designs are almost always the safer default choice, and it’s what we recommend to the majority of the shops we quote across central Iowa.
Dual-Width and Adjustable Two Post Arm Designs
Shops that see everything from a Miata to a one-ton dually need two post arm designs that can adjust on the fly, not just front-to-back but in overall width. Dual-width arm systems let you narrow the reach for low sports cars and widen it out for full-size trucks and vans, usually with a second set of pick-up points or telescoping sections built into the arm itself. Without that flexibility, you either buy a second lift sized for trucks or you accept sketchy pad placement on vehicles the arms weren’t really built for.
We see this most with mixed-use shops, tire shops, and dealerships that service both compact trade-ins and full-size trucks in the same bay. A dual-width capable arm design costs a little more up front but pays for itself the first time a lifted truck or a low import shows up on the same lift a week apart. If your vehicle mix is genuinely unpredictable, we’d rather spec the adjustable arm design once than have you calling us in a year asking about a second lift.
Three-Stage vs. Two-Stage Arms
Arm stages matter as much as the symmetric/asymmetric question. Two-stage arms are shorter and simpler, common on lighter-duty lifts, but they run out of reach fast on longer wheelbase trucks and vans. Three-stage arms telescope out further and give you the reach to hit factory lift points on nearly anything from a compact car to an extended-cab pickup, which is why most 9,000 lb-plus commercial two post lifts we install use three-stage arm designs standard.
The tradeoff is weight and cost — three-stage arms are heavier assemblies and add to the price of the lift. For a shop that only ever works passenger cars and small crossovers, two-stage arms are perfectly adequate and there’s no reason to pay for reach you’ll never use. But if trucks, vans, or SUVs show up even occasionally, we steer customers toward three-stage two post arm designs so nobody’s stretching a pad to a lift point that’s two inches out of reach.
Screw Pads, Slip Pads, and Arm Restraint Systems
The arm itself is only half the story — how the pads and restraints work with it matters just as much. Most modern two post arm designs use screw-style adjustable pads at the end of the arm so you can fine-tune height without stacking blocks, plus a mechanical restraint that locks the arm in position once you’ve found the vehicle’s lift points. Some cheaper imported lifts skip a proper positive-locking restraint or use a weak pin system that can walk under load, which is a real safety issue, not a convenience feature.
