That little latch or pin sitting near the swing arm doesn’t look like much, but it’s the only thing standing between a properly loaded vehicle and an arm that swings free under a car. Why the Arm Restraint Matters More Than People Think

Every two post lift arm is designed to swing out of the way so you can position it under a vehicle’s lift points. Once it’s in place, the arm restraint is what locks that arm from swinging back out while the car is up in the air. Without a working restraint, a bump, a shifted load, or simple vibration from a running engine can walk the arm loose, and a car settling unevenly on a two post lift is a serious hazard for anyone underneath it. What a Proper Two Post Arm Restraint Inspection Covers

Start with each arm at full extension and full retraction, checking that the restraint latch or pin engages cleanly at every stop position, not just one or two. Many two post lifts use a spring-loaded latch that drops into notches along the arm; others use a pin-and-hole design. Either way, the mechanism should move freely and snap or drop into place without you having to force it or wiggle the arm to get it seated.

Next, look closely at the physical condition of the restraint itself. Check for cracks in the casting, elongated or worn holes, a return spring that’s stretched out or missing, and any rust buildup that could prevent full engagement. Wipe away grease and grime so you can actually see the metal, because a restraint packed with old lubricant and dirt can look fine while hiding real wear underneath. If the latch doesn’t return to its resting position on its own once you release it, that spring needs replacing before the lift goes back into service.

How Often to Run This Check

We recommend a full two post arm restraint inspection at every 90-day scheduled maintenance visit, with a quick visual and functional check happening daily by whoever is actually operating the lift. That daily check takes seconds: pull each arm out, confirm the restraint engages, and move on. It becomes second nature once techs get in the habit, and it catches problems long before your quarterly service visit would.

Shops running heavier daily volume, especially those handling trucks and SUVs regularly, should tighten that interval. More cycles per day means more wear on the latch mechanism and faster degradation of the spring tension that makes it work. If your shop runs two shifts or handles fleet work with constant lift use, we’d suggest a documented weekly check in addition to the daily glance, logged the same way you’d log any other safety inspection point.

Common Failure Points We See in the Field

The most frequent issue we find during a two post arm restraint inspection is a worn or broken return spring, which stops the latch from dropping into the notch automatically. Techs sometimes compensate by manually forcing the latch down, which masks the problem instead of fixing it and creates a false sense of security for the next person who uses the lift. The second most common issue is a bent latch pin from repeated impact, usually caused by arms being swung too fast or slammed into position.

We also see restraints that were never properly adjusted after an arm assembly replacement or after the lift was moved and reinstalled. If the geometry is off even slightly, the latch may appear to engage while only catching partial contact with the notch, which fails under load exactly when it matters most. This is one of the reasons we always recommend a professional check after any lift relocation or major arm service, not just a quick glance from the operator.

When to Replace Instead of Repair

Some restraint issues are simple fixes: a fresh spring, a cleaned and lubricated pin, a tightened mounting bolt. Others mean the whole restraint assembly needs to come off the arm. If you see cracking in the casting itself, if the notch edges are visibly worn round instead of square, or if the latch has been bent and straightened more than once, it’s time to replace the part rather than patch it again. Documentation Matters as Much as the Check Itself

A two post arm restraint inspection that isn’t written down might as well not have happened if your shop is ever audited or involved in an incident claim. Keep a simple log with the date, the tech’s initials, and a pass or fail note for each arm restraint on every lift in your bay. This takes thirty seconds per lift and gives you a paper trail showing due diligence, which matters to insurers and matters even more if OSHA or an ALI-certified inspector ever asks to see your maintenance records.
