You might have a car up in the air for a full weekend while you cut, weld, or wait on a part to arrive. That means the safety locks — not the hydraulics — are doing the real holding for most of the time the vehicle is elevated. If you’re shopping for a two post car lift for home garage restoration projects, the mechanical safety-cam system matters more to you than it does to a quick-lube shop down the street.

It also means arm positioning and restraint matter differently. Restoration vehicles are often missing body panels, have had suspension components removed, or are sitting unevenly loaded because you’ve pulled an engine and the weight distribution has shifted. For restoration work, we push customers toward the finer-adjustment systems, because you’re rarely lifting a vehicle at a factory-standard point — you’re often working around missing panels, aftermarket suspension, or a partially disassembled chassis.

When you’re at a dealer lot or looking at a lift in person, physically test the arm restraint yourself. Extend the arm, lock it, then try to move it by hand with real force. A restraint that flexes or shifts under hand pressure will move under vehicle load too, especially with the uneven weight distribution common in restoration work. Ask specifically whether the arm restraint is a positive mechanical lock or just friction-based — friction locks are common on cheaper imported lifts and they are not what you want holding a partially disassembled classic car steady while you’re underneath it with a cutting torch.

Safety-Cam Engagement: The System That Actually Holds the Car Up

The safety cams — sometimes called safety locks or dogs — are the mechanical teeth that engage as the lift rises, catching every couple of inches so that even a total hydraulic failure leaves the vehicle supported mechanically rather than dropping. For a two post car lift for home garage restoration setup, this is arguably the single most important safety feature on the whole machine, because restoration jobs leave a vehicle sitting at height far longer than routine service work.

Before buying, ask how the safety cams engage and release — automatic engagement as the lift rises is standard on quality equipment, but the release mechanism varies. Ceiling height matters just as much for restoration work specifically, since you’re often working on the vehicle at full height for extended stretches, sometimes with the hood or trunk open, sometimes with a hoist positioned above for engine pulls. Twelve feet of clearance is a comfortable minimum for most two post lifts at full extension, but measure your actual space, including any garage door tracks or ceiling-mounted obstructions, before you commit to a model. A lift that maxes out at 139 inches, for example, needs real headroom above that to be usable for tall trucks or vehicles with a raised hood.

Pre-Purchase Checklist for Restoration-Focused Buyers

Here’s what we tell every hobbyist to physically verify before signing for a lift intended for restoration and metal work. First, confirm the arm restraint is a positive mechanical lock, not friction-based, and test it by hand. Second, listen for even, simultaneous safety-cam engagement on both columns during a test cycle. Third, check that arms have enough reach and low-profile pad options to get under a vehicle that’s missing rocker panels or has non-standard lift points. Fourth, confirm your slab thickness and get anchor specs in writing rather than assuming your existing concrete will work.

Fifth, measure your actual ceiling height including any obstructions, not just the garage’s stated wall height. Sixth, ask about parts availability for the safety-cam and restraint hardware specifically — these are wear items on a lift that sees vehicles sitting at height for long stretches, and you want to know a replacement part is a phone call away, not a special order from overseas. A two post car lift for home garage restoration use is a long-term investment, and running this checklist before you buy saves you from discovering a safety gap after a car is already hanging in the air.

Getting the Install Right Matters as Much as the Lift Itself

Even the best arm restraint and safety-cam system won’t perform correctly if the lift isn’t installed square, level, and properly anchored. We see this most often with home installs where the columns weren’t checked for plumb before the anchors went in — a lift that’s slightly out of square puts uneven stress on the safety-cam engagement, sometimes causing exactly the uneven-drop scenario that the safety system is supposed to prevent.
