Start With the Data Tag, Not the Symptom

A cable that’s two inches short won’t tension, and one that’s two inches long will let the carriages drift out of sync. On older equipment that tag is often painted over, rusted, or gone entirely. That’s normal in Iowa, where a lot of the lifts we service have been in the same building since the eighties. When there’s no tag, we work from geometry: column height, overall width between columns, carriage style, arm configuration (symmetric versus asymmetric), whether the lift is overhead or floorplate, and the routing of the equalization cables. Equalization cables keep both carriages rising and falling together. Arm Restraints, Latches, and the Safety Hardware That Gets Skipped
Arm restraints keep a swing arm from rotating out from under a vehicle while it’s in the air. They’re gear-and-pin or pawl-style depending on the brand and vintage, and they wear because they’re used dozens of times a day and live at floor level where every bit of grit and brake dust ends up. A restraint that clicks but doesn’t hold, or an arm you can swing freely while loaded, is not a maintenance item to schedule — it’s an immediate shutdown.
Same story with the safety latches inside the columns. Those are the mechanical stops that hold the carriage if hydraulic pressure is lost, and they’re released by a cable or bar linkage that stretches, kinks, and seizes over time. When a technician tells us “only one side unlocks,” it’s usually the release linkage rather than the latch itself. Both are inexpensive relative to the cost of a lift being down, and both are components we stock. Cylinders, Seals, and Chasing a Leak Properly
Hydraulic cylinders on a two-post lift are simple, which is why a leak frustrates people so much — there aren’t many places for fluid to escape, and yet fluid keeps escaping. Start by identifying whether it’s an external leak (fluid on the floor, wet cylinder body, weeping fitting) or an internal bypass (the lift drifts down under load but nothing is wet). External leaks are usually a rod seal, a wiper, or a fitting; internal bypass typically means the piston seal has failed or the rod is scored.
Reseal kits make sense when the bore and rod are clean and straight. If the rod is pitted from sitting in a wet floor drain area — something we run into constantly in older Iowa buildings — a new seal will chew itself up within months and you’re better off replacing the cylinder outright. Before you condemn a cylinder, check the easy stuff: fluid level and type, a clogged suction filter, a stuck lowering valve, and air in the system from a low reservoir. Power Units, Motors, and Electrical Gremlins
The power unit is a motor, a pump, a reservoir, and a valve block. When a lift won’t raise, the fault is usually electrical rather than hydraulic. Check incoming voltage under load, not at rest — a shop on a long feeder with an undersized breaker can read fine on a meter and still starve the motor when the pump loads up. Single-phase 220V units draw hard on startup, and a marginal circuit will trip, hum, or cook a contactor.
Beyond voltage, we look at the up-button switch, the contactor or starter, the motor start capacitor on single-phase units, and the lowering solenoid. Capacitors are a common failure and an easy one to swap. If the motor runs but the lift won’t rise, you’re back to hydraulics: low fluid, a plugged filter screen, a leaking check valve, or a lowering valve stuck partly open. Fluid choice matters too — many manufacturers spec AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, and using ATF or a heavy oil because it was on the shelf changes pump behavior and seal life. Keep a gallon of the correct fluid in the building.
