A two post in-ground lift solves the ceiling height problem that kills a lot of shop layouts before they even get started, but it doesn’t solve every problem by itself. We got a call from a small fleet operator in West Des Moines running a handful of pickups and cargo vans who does a steady stream of suspension and shock replacement work, and the question wasn’t whether to get a lift – it was which configuration would actually fit under their existing roof trusses without forcing an addition. The catch shows up in older shop buildings, converted pole barns, or any bay with roof trusses lower than 14 feet. Once you start losing headroom to trusses, ductwork, or lighting fixtures, that overhead bar becomes the limiting factor rather than the vehicle height. You’re looking at breaking out a section of floor, setting the below-grade housing or sleeve, plumbing it correctly for drainage, and pouring new concrete before the columns ever go in. None of this makes an in-ground unit harder to own, but it does mean fleet operators should build a maintenance routine around it rather than treating it like a surface lift. We recommend annual inspections that specifically check the below-grade housing for water intrusion and confirm the column anchoring hasn’t shifted, in addition to the standard cable and arm inspections every two post lift needs regardless of configuration.

Which Configuration Fits a West Des Moines Fleet Bay
