Getting the two post lift anchor bolts torque right is the single cheapest insurance policy you will ever buy for a vehicle lift, and it is also the step most people rush. Why the number on the sticker is not the whole story

Every manufacturer publishes a figure. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas — they all give you a value for the supplied wedge anchors, and for the 3/4-inch anchors used on most passenger-car two-post lifts that figure typically lands in the 90 to 150 ft-lb range depending on brand and anchor length. That number is not arbitrary. It is the clamp load the engineer decided the baseplate needs so the column cannot rock under an off-center load. What the sticker does not tell you is that the number is only valid if three other things are already true: the concrete meets minimum strength, the anchor is set to full embedment depth, and the baseplate is shimmed flat.

That is why we treat two post lift anchor bolts torque as the last step of an installation, not the first. If we set a column on a slab that flexes, we can crank the nut to spec all day and the column will still walk. The torque wrench is measuring friction in the threads and the wedge, not the health of the foundation underneath. We have gone back to shops where somebody bought a used hoist, dropped it on a 3-inch garage floor, torqued everything perfectly, and had anchors pull a cone of concrete out within a month. The wrench told them everything was fine. The slab disagreed.

Concrete comes first: thickness, strength, and cure

Most two-post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb class call for a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of the taller or higher-capacity models want more. In Iowa we deal with a lot of older shop floors that were poured for storage, not for hoisting, and a lot of residential garages where the apron is thick but the center of the bay is not. Before we quote an install we ask what the slab is, and if nobody knows, we core or we drill a test hole. It takes ten minutes and it settles the argument.

Cure time matters too. Fresh concrete needs a full 28 days before it sees anchor loads, and we have had customers push back on that because the building inspection is done and the tools are already in the bay. We hold the line anyway. Green concrete will accept an anchor and pass a torque check on day seven, then let go quietly at day forty when nobody is looking. Reinforcement is the other variable — if a bit walks into rebar and you cannot reach embedment depth, that hole is dead. Fill it, move over, and re-drill. Never split the difference by torquing a short anchor harder to make up for lost embedment; that is exactly the failure mode we get called out to fix.

Drilling and setting the anchor correctly

We drill with a rotary hammer and a fresh carbide bit sized to the anchor, hold the drill plumb, and go deeper than the anchor needs so debris has somewhere to fall. Then we vacuum the hole. Blowing it out with shop air just relocates the dust to the walls of the hole where it acts like grease. A dusty hole is one of the top reasons an anchor spins instead of setting, and once it spins you will never see correct two post lift anchor bolts torque out of it.

Setting the anchor is a specific motion, not a guess. The nut and washer go on flush with the top of the threads, the anchor gets tapped down through the baseplate hole until the washer sits on the plate, and then the nut gets snugged and turned. As the nut pulls the bolt up, the wedge expands against the concrete. That expansion is what creates holding power — the torque value is just how we confirm the wedge has fully engaged. If the anchor keeps turning without building resistance, the hole is oversized or the concrete is soft. Pull it, plug it with high-strength grout, and relocate. We keep a bag of anchor-grade patch in the truck for exactly this reason, because it happens on maybe one job in five.

Shims, plumb, and why over-torquing is a real problem

A baseplate that is not flat on the slab is the number-one cause of anchors that loosen over time. We check each column for plumb in both directions and shim under the baseplate — full shim plates that span the plate, not a stack of random washers under one corner. Manufacturers cap total shim thickness, usually around a half inch, and if you need more than that you have a floor problem to solve first, not a shim problem.

Once the plate is flat and plumb, we pull each nut to spec with a calibrated click-type wrench, working around the plate rather than finishing one anchor at a time. And we stop at the number. Over-torquing does not make a lift safer. It stretches the anchor body past yield, strips the cone, or cracks the concrete around the hole, and every one of those results in less holding power than a properly torqued anchor. We have replaced anchors that a well-meaning tech put a four-foot cheater bar on, and the top of the bolt had necked down visibly. Re-torque intervals and what an annual inspection catches

Anchors relax. Concrete creeps a little, the wedge seats further, and thermal cycling in an unheated Iowa shop does not help. Our standard advice is to re-check the anchors after the first week of use, again at thirty days, and then on an annual schedule alongside the rest of the lift inspection. ANSI/ALI standards call for annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and anchor condition is squarely on that checklist.

Re-checking is simple: put the wrench on and see if the nut moves before it hits spec. If it takes a quarter turn to reach the value, that is normal seating and you are done. If it takes a full turn or more, or if the nut turns continuously without building torque, the anchor has lost its grip and needs to come out. We also look for rust weeping from under the baseplate, hairline cracks radiating from anchor holes, and any gap you can slide a business card into. Any of those means we are pulling the column and looking at the concrete. Common mistakes we find in Iowa shops

The list is short and it repeats. Anchors driven with an impact gun instead of torqued — an impact has no idea what clamp load it is producing. Anchors reused after a lift was relocated, which is never acceptable because a wedge anchor sets once. Anchors that are the wrong length for the slab, usually shorter, because someone grabbed what was on the shelf at the hardware store instead of ordering the manufacturer’s kit. Anchor holes drilled too close to a slab edge or an existing control joint, where the concrete simply cannot develop a full failure cone.

We also see lifts installed over expansion joints, which puts one column on each side of a moving crack. That job needs a slab cut and a proper new pad, and no amount of attention to two post lift anchor bolts torque will save it. Where we earn our keep is the gray areas — an unknown slab, a used lift with no documentation, a floor with heated tubing in it, a building where the only good concrete is not where you want the bays.
