A two post lift isn’t held up by its base plate sitting on the floor — it’s held up entirely by the anchor bolts driven into your concrete. Why Two Post Lift Anchoring Isn’t Optional
A two post lift lifts a vehicle from two contact points and relies on those posts staying perfectly rigid relative to each other and to the floor. There’s no frame connecting the columns underground like there is with a four post — the concrete itself, combined with the anchor bolts, does that job. If one post’s anchoring is weak, that post can lean, twist, or walk slightly every cycle. Over time this shows up as doors that won’t close on a lifted car, arms that bind, or worst case, a post that pulls loose entirely.
This is why every reputable two post lift manufacturer, Rotary and Challenger included, publishes a minimum concrete thickness, cure time, and rebar/mesh requirement as part of the anchoring spec — and it’s why that spec isn’t a suggestion. We’ve walked into shops where the lift was installed on a slab that looked fine on the surface but was actually a thin overlay poured over old, cracked concrete. The anchors held for a while. Then they didn’t. Two post lift anchoring has to account for what’s actually underneath the surface, not just what the floor looks like.
Wedge Anchors vs. Adhesive (Epoxy) Anchors
Most two post lifts ship with mechanical wedge anchors, and for new, properly cured slabs at full thickness, they work well. A wedge anchor bites into the concrete by expansion, and its holding power depends entirely on clean, correctly sized holes and concrete that isn’t cracked, aggregate-starved, or too close to a slab edge or expansion joint. We use a hammer drill with a bit matched exactly to the anchor spec, blow the hole clean of dust, and torque every anchor to the manufacturer’s number — not “tight,” a number.
Adhesive anchors come into play when the slab is older, thinner, or has visible cracking near the anchor pattern, or when local code or the lift manufacturer calls for them at a given loading. Epoxy anchor systems bond the threaded rod to the concrete along its entire length rather than relying on mechanical expansion, which spreads the load differently and can be the safer call in marginal slabs. The tradeoff is cure time — you’re not putting a vehicle on that lift for hours, sometimes overnight, while the epoxy sets up. Anyone offering to shortcut that cure time to get you back in business faster is offering you a liability, not a favor.
Slab Thickness and Concrete Quality Come First
Before anchoring even starts, the floor has to qualify. Most two post lift manufacturers call for a minimum of four inches of solid, properly cured concrete at the anchor locations, often more depending on the lift’s capacity, and that concrete needs to have cured for the number of days specified — usually around a month for full strength, not the three or four days some builders assume is enough. Anchoring into concrete that hasn’t fully cured is one of the fastest ways to get pullout failure, because the anchor never gets the holding strength the spec assumes it will.
We test every slab before we commit to anchor locations. That means checking for existing cracks, control joints, rebar or mesh placement, and overall slab thickness — sometimes with a core sample if there’s any doubt. If your shop floor doesn’t meet spec, the answer isn’t to anchor anyway and hope. It’s either relocating the lift a few feet to better concrete, pouring a new footing, or in some cases choosing a different lift style that spreads its load differently. We’d rather have that conversation before the lift arrives than after someone’s truck is fifteen feet in the air.
Anchor Bolt Pattern and Post Spacing
Every two post lift has a specific anchor bolt pattern dictated by its base plate design, and that pattern isn’t something to eyeball. The holes have to be drilled to the exact depth and diameter called out in the lift’s install manual, in the exact pattern stamped into the base plate, with each post square to the other and to the vehicle drive-through path. Get the spacing or squareness off even slightly and you’ll fight arm alignment and door clearance for the life of the lift.
We also pay close attention to how close anchor holes fall to slab edges, saw cuts, and existing joints, because edge distance requirements are part of every legitimate anchoring spec. An anchor placed too close to a slab edge can’t develop full holding strength no matter how well it’s torqued, and that’s a detail that’s easy to miss if you’re anchoring a lift for the first time without a torque wrench and a tape measure in hand at every hole.
Torque Specs and Why They Matter
Anchor bolts have a manufacturer-specified torque value, and hitting that number — not exceeding it, not falling short — is what generates the clamping force the anchor needs to hold. Under-torquing leaves an anchor that can work loose under repeated cyclic loading from a lift running up and down all day. Over-torquing can crack the surrounding concrete or shear the anchor stud, which is arguably worse because it can fail without warning. We check every anchor with a calibrated torque wrench during install, and we recheck them again after the lift has been cycled a few dozen times, because concrete anchors typically need a re-torque once they’ve settled in.
Warning Signs Your Anchoring Has Failed
A two post lift with failing anchors gives you signals before it fails catastrophically, if you know what to look for. Visible cracking radiating from an anchor hole, a hairline gap opening between the base plate and the floor, a post that visibly rocks or shifts when the lift is loaded, or arms that suddenly need constant readjustment are all signs the anchoring has degraded. Concrete dust or fine debris appearing around the base of a post that wasn’t there before is another red flag — it usually means the anchor is moving inside its hole.
If you notice any of this, stop using the lift until it’s inspected.
