Two post lift arm restraints are the single most ignored safety component in the average Iowa shop, and we say that after two decades of climbing under lifts from Sioux City to Dubuque. They are the little gear-and-pin assemblies at the base of each swing arm that stop the arms from rotating out from under a vehicle once it is off the ground. When they work, nobody notices them. When they are worn, seized, or full of grease-caked dirt, they quietly stop doing their job and nobody notices that either — until a truck shifts on a lift and the arms walk sideways. What the restraint mechanism actually does
Every asymmetric or symmetric two post lift uses swing arms that pivot freely at the carriage so you can reach the manufacturer’s lift points on a Civic one hour and a three-quarter-ton pickup the next. That freedom is exactly the hazard. Once the vehicle’s weight is lifted off the ground, an arm that can rotate is an arm that can slide out from under a pinch weld if the load shifts, if the tech bumps it with a transmission jack, or if the vehicle was set slightly off-center to begin with. The restraint locks that rotation.
On the vast majority of surface-mounted lifts, the design is a toothed gear plate welded or bolted to the arm pivot and a spring-loaded pin or pawl that drops into the gear teeth. Lower the arm to the ground and the pin lifts clear so the arm swings freely. Raise the carriage even an inch and gravity or a spring drops the pin into a tooth. That is why the restraints on a properly working lift engage themselves — there is no lever for the tech to remember. Some heavier commercial units use a sliding wedge or a rack-and-pawl arrangement instead of a round gear, and inground lifts use their own variation, but the principle is identical: the arm gets one degree of freedom taken away the moment the vehicle leaves the floor. Understanding that sequence matters, because it tells you what to look for when it stops happening.
The four ways two post lift arm restraints fail in real shops
First and most common: contamination. Undercoating overspray, chassis grease, road salt from an Iowa winter, and brake dust pack into the gear teeth until the pin can no longer seat fully. It looks engaged from three feet away. It is riding on top of the debris. Second: worn teeth. On a lift that has taken twenty years of heavy trucks, the gear teeth round over and the pin can climb out under lateral load. Third: broken or stretched springs. The pin depends on spring pressure to drop and stay down; a rusted spring leaves the pin hanging half in, half out. Fourth: bent or mangled pins, usually from someone forcing an arm to swing while the lift was raised.
We also see restraints that were never right from day one because of a sloppy install — arms shimmed wrong, carriage not square, or aftermarket adapters stacked so tall that the tech gave up on setting the arms properly and just let them float. That last one is a habit problem more than a hardware problem, but the outcome is the same. If your two post lift arm restraints are not clicking audibly as the arms move through their travel, something on that list is wrong. How to test yours in under two minutes
Here is the check we run on every service visit, and it costs you nothing but time. With the lift empty and fully lowered, swing each arm through its full arc and listen. You should hear and feel distinct detents — a ratcheting click as the pin skips tooth to tooth. Silence or a smooth glide means the pin is not reaching the gear. Next, raise the carriages a foot off the floor with nothing on the lift and try to rotate each arm by hand. It should not budge. If you can move it even a few degrees beyond normal gear backlash, that restraint is not holding.
Then get eyes on the hardware itself. Look for the pin standing proud of its bore, a spring that is stretched or missing coils, elongated pin holes, and gear teeth that have gone from square-topped to rounded. Check the arm pivot bolt torque while you are there; a loose pivot lets the whole gear plate tilt and defeats the geometry. Do this on all four arms, not just the two you use most, because the rear arms on an asymmetric lift take a beating from truck lifting and get inspected half as often. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and we do plenty of those across central Iowa, but the two-minute weekly version is what actually catches problems before they become incidents. Repair versus replacement on two post lift arm restraints
Most restraint problems are repairable for the cost of a small parts kit and an hour of labor. Springs, pins, roll pins, and gear plates are available as service parts for current Rotary and Challenger models, and for a good number of discontinued ones too — we keep a shelf of legacy restraint hardware in Ames precisely because shops call us about lifts that are older than the tech running them. Cleaning, a new spring, and a fresh pin will bring back the great majority of units we look at.
Replacement of the whole arm assembly becomes the right call when the gear teeth on the arm itself are worn past spec, when the pin bore is elongated, or when the arm has been bent from a drive-in strike. Do not weld on a swing arm. Do not fabricate a pin from a bolt and a nut. We have seen both, and we have condemned lifts because of both — a repair that changes the strength or geometry of a structural member voids the ALI certification and, more importantly, is the kind of thing that turns a near-miss into an injury. Adapters, extensions, and the leverage problem
Truck adapters and frame extensions are where good restraints get overwhelmed. Every inch of adapter height moves the contact point further from the arm pivot and multiplies the side load the restraint pin has to resist. Stack a tall adapter on a screw-pad extension on a lifted pickup and you can generate enough lateral force to overcome a marginal restraint that would have been fine under a sedan. That is not a reason to avoid adapters — you need them to reach the correct lift points — it is a reason to keep the restraint hardware in top condition on any lift that sees trucks.
Two rules we give every shop we install for. One: never stack adapters beyond what the lift manufacturer’s chart allows, and never improvise with blocks of wood or scrap steel. Two: set the arms so the pads sit square under the lift point before you raise, so the arm is not being asked to hold a twisted load. If your techs are fighting the arms into position, the pad configuration is wrong for the vehicle mix and you need different adapters, not more muscle. Brand differences worth knowing
Rotary’s SPOA and SPO series have used several restraint generations over the decades, and the parts are not interchangeable across all of them, so serial number matters when you order. The newer designs are well sealed and hold up impressively in dirty shop environments; the older ones benefit from a periodic teardown and clean. Challenger’s commercial two post units use a robust gear-and-pawl setup that we rarely see fail outright, though the springs are a consumable like anywhere else. On the home and light-commercial side, BendPak and Atlas both use straightforward gear plates that are easy to service with hand tools.
What matters more than brand is documentation. Get your model and serial number off the data plate before you call anyone about parts, including us — that one number turns a guessing game into a same-day shipment. We keep cross-reference data for lifts going back to the 1970s, and if we cannot identify a restraint from the plate we will ask for photos of the arm pivot from two angles and identify it that way. If you have a lift with no legible plate at all, that is a conversation worth having, because unidentifiable equipment is hard to inspect, hard to certify, and hard to insure.
Building restraint checks into shop routine
The shops that never have arm-restraint incidents are not the ones with the newest equipment. They are the ones where checking the restraints is part of the morning routine, the same as checking the air system. We recommend three layers. Daily: the tech using the lift swings the arms and listens for detents before the first vehicle goes up. Weekly: someone runs the empty-lift rotation test on all four arms and eyeballs the pins and springs. Annually: a qualified inspector goes through the entire lift to ALI standards and gives you documentation you can hand your insurance carrier.
That third layer is where we spend a lot of our time. A lift with clean, clicking restraints usually has good cable tension, good anchor torque, and a shop culture that pays attention. A lift with seized restraints usually has three other problems we are about to find.
