The arms telescope in and out, and the pads on the ends adjust up and down, so the same lift can accommodate a compact sedan one hour and a full-size pickup the next. That flexibility is the entire point of a two post design compared to something fixed like a drive-on ramp.

A lift rated for enough tonnage to hold a 3/4-ton truck still won’t work if the arms can’t extend far enough to reach the frame rails without the front pads sitting too close to the tires or the rear arms running out of travel before they clear the rear axle.

Arm Restraints and Locking Mechanisms

Every set of two post lift arms needs a restraint system that locks the arm in position once it’s under the vehicle, so it can’t swing free while the vehicle is in the air. Most restraints are a simple pin or latch that engages a series of holes or notches along the arm, and they need to be checked and adjusted as part of routine maintenance, not just at initial setup.

A worn or bent restraint pin is one of the most common failure points we find during inspections, and it’s often invisible until someone’s under the vehicle and the arm shifts. Keeping Your Arms in Safe Working Condition

Arms take abuse. They get swung into columns, dragged across shop floors, and loaded unevenly by techs in a hurry. Over time that shows up as bent arm tubes, worn pivot bushings, and pads that no longer sit flat. None of that is always visible from a quick glance, which is why annual inspection matters even on lifts that seem to be working fine.
