Why Cable Inspection Deserves Its Own Checklist
Cables carry the entire load of the vehicle on most two post lifts with cable-based equalization systems, and they do it silently for years before anyone thinks to look closely. Unlike a hydraulic leak that leaves a puddle on the floor, a fraying cable often hides its damage inside the strand, under grease, or on the section that spends most of its life wound around a sheave where nobody sees it. That’s exactly why a dedicated two post lift cable inspection checklist matters more than a general once-over.
We’ve walked into shops where the arms, locks, and hydraulics were in great shape, but the cables hadn’t been touched since installation five or six years earlier. Cables stretch, cables corrode, and cables fatigue from constant flexing over sheaves every time the lift cycles. A checklist forces you to actually run your hand down the cable and look at every foot of it, rather than glancing at the carriage and assuming the rest is fine. In our experience, shops that build cable inspection into a monthly routine catch problems while they’re still a low-cost cable swap, not an emergency shutdown with a vehicle stuck in the air.
Step One: Visual Check Along the Full Cable Length
Start at the top of each cable and walk it down to where it anchors, looking for broken strands, rust bleeding through the outer wire, kinks, or flat spots where the cable has been pinched. Any place you see individual wire strands sticking out, even one or two, means that cable needs to come off the lift. A single broken strand doesn’t mean instant failure, but it does mean the cable is losing capacity and every cycle after that adds more stress to the remaining strands.
Pay close attention to the sections that wrap around sheaves at the top of the columns, since that’s where cables bend the most and wear the fastest. We also check for discoloration or a bluish tint, which can indicate heat damage from friction against a misaligned sheave. If you find rust, don’t just wipe it off and move on — surface rust on a cable usually means moisture got past the lubricant, and the wire underneath may already be pitted. This visual pass is the backbone of any two post lift cable inspection checklist, and it takes less time than most techs expect once it becomes routine.
Step Two: Check Cable Tension and Equalization
Cables on a two post lift work in pairs or sets to keep both carriages rising and falling evenly, and uneven tension is one of the earliest warning signs of a problem before you ever see a frayed strand. Run the lift up empty and watch both sides rise together. If one side lags or the carriages aren’t level side to side, that’s usually a tension or stretch issue rather than a hydraulic one.
Most manufacturers, including Rotary and Challenger, spec an adjustment procedure using the equalizer cable adjustment nuts, and running that adjustment should be part of your regular maintenance, not just something you do after noticing a problem. We recommend checking tension every few months on shops running high daily cycle counts, and at minimum twice a year for lighter-use bays. A cable that’s stretched beyond adjustment range is telling you it’s near the end of its service life, and that’s a sign to plan a replacement before it becomes an unscheduled one.
Step Three: Inspect Anchor Points and Cable Ends
The swaged or crimped ends of a cable take enormous stress every time a vehicle goes up, and that’s often where failure starts rather than in the middle of the cable run. Look closely at where each cable attaches to the carriage and where it anchors near the base of the column. Any sign of the crimp sleeve slipping, cracking, or pulling away from the cable body is a stop-what-you’re-doing issue.
We also check the anchor bolts and brackets themselves for wear, since a worn anchor point can let a cable shift position slightly over time, changing the load angle and accelerating wear somewhere else along the run. On older lifts we service across Iowa, this is one of the most commonly overlooked spots because it’s tucked down low and out of the eye line during a quick daily check. Step Four: Lubrication and Sheave Condition
Dry cables wear faster, plain and simple, and a lot of shops either over-lubricate with the wrong product or skip it entirely because nobody assigned the task. Use a lubricant rated for wire rope, applied lightly along the length, and wipe off excess so it doesn’t attract grit that acts like sandpaper on the strands.
While you’re at it, spin each sheave by hand and feel for roughness, wobble, or flat spots on the wheel itself. A damaged sheave will chew through a brand-new cable in a fraction of the time a good one would, so replacing a worn sheave alongside a cable swap is often the smarter move rather than putting fresh cable through the same bad pulley.
Step Five: Know When to Stop Adjusting and Start Replacing
There’s a point where continuing to adjust a stretched or worn cable stops being maintenance and starts being a delay tactic. If a cable is at the end of its adjustment range, showing broken strands, rust, or heat discoloration, or if the ends show any crimp damage, replacement is the right call, not another round of tightening.
