When a two post lift stops raising vehicles the way it should, most shops assume the whole unit is shot — but nine times out of ten, two post lift hydraulic power unit troubleshooting comes down to one of six components, and half of them are cheap to fix. Start With the Motor: Is It Getting Power and Turning?

The first branch point in any two post lift hydraulic power unit troubleshooting job is simple: does the motor spin at all when you press the up button? If you hear nothing, check the disconnect, the breaker, and the wall outlet or junction box feeding the unit first — we’ve found more than one “dead lift” that was actually a tripped breaker in an unrelated panel. If the motor hums but doesn’t turn, you’re likely looking at a bad start capacitor on a single-phase unit, or a seized motor bearing that’s been groaning for months before it finally locked up.

If the motor spins freely with the pump disconnected but bogs down or trips overload once reconnected, the pump itself is the drag — either it’s seized internally or it’s pulling way more amperage than it should. Write down the motor’s nameplate voltage and amperage and compare it to what you’re actually measuring at the terminals; a motor running 15-20% over its rated draw is telling you something downstream is fighting it. This single check saves more misdiagnosed power units than any other step, because a lot of “bad motors” are actually good motors being strangled by a failing pump or a closed valve.

Pump Not Building Pressure or Losing Prime

A gear pump that spins but won’t lift is one of the most common calls we get, and it’s almost always one of three things: a lost prime, worn gears, or a cracked pickup tube inside the reservoir. Air trapped in the pump housing after a fluid change is the easiest fix — some units need to be gravity-bled or run momentarily unloaded to push air out before they’ll build pressure again. If the fluid level looks fine and the pump still won’t push oil, pull it and inspect the gear faces for scoring; once a gear pump wears past a certain point, no amount of adjustment brings the pressure back.

We also see pumps that were rebuilt or replaced with a mismatched flow rating for the lift, which causes slow, weak lifts even though everything technically works. If your lift used to raise a car in fifteen seconds and now takes over a minute, that gradual pump wear is often the real story, not a valve or motor problem. Matching pump GPM to your specific model matters more than shops realize, and it’s worth confirming against your lift’s original spec sheet before you install a generic replacement.

Relief Valve and Solenoid Valve Behavior

If the pump builds pressure but the cylinders won’t hold or the lift creeps down under load, the relief valve or lowering solenoid is usually the culprit in two post lift hydraulic power unit troubleshooting. A relief valve set too low will bleed pressure back to tank before the lift reaches full height, and one that’s stuck or gummed with old fluid can cause the same symptom intermittently. Solenoid valves fail in two directions — stuck closed means the lift won’t lower at all, and stuck open means it won’t hold pressure and drifts down on its own.

Cycling the solenoid manually (most have a manual override pin) tells you quickly whether it’s electrical or mechanical. If the valve clicks and moves freely by hand but the lift still won’t lower electrically, check the coil resistance and the control switch wiring before you replace the whole valve body. It does — heat, moisture, and metal shavings from a worn pump all accumulate in that reservoir over years of use. Draining and replacing the fluid, along with a thorough reservoir cleaning, is cheap insurance that resolves more issues than people expect, especially on lifts that haven’t been serviced in five-plus years. If you’ve already replaced fluid and the problem persists, pull the check valve and inspect the seat and ball or poppet for pitting. A power unit that’s otherwise mechanically sound can still misbehave for months on nothing more than contaminated fluid working its way through every seal and orifice in the circuit.

Electrical Controls, Switches, and Wiring

Not every symptom traces back to hydraulics — a surprising number of “power unit failures” are actually control-side electrical faults. A worn up/down switch, a loose wire nut inside the control box, or a tripped thermal overload on the motor itself can all present as a completely dead lift. We recommend checking voltage at the motor terminals directly before assuming the motor or pump has failed, because if voltage isn’t reaching the motor, nothing downstream matters yet.

Foot switches and hand-held pendant controls also wear out from years of shop-floor abuse, cracking internally in ways that aren’t visible from outside. If your lift works intermittently or only responds when you jiggle the control cord, that’s an electrical symptom, not a hydraulic one, and no amount of pump or valve work will fix it. When Leaks Are Actually the Root Cause

Sometimes what looks like a power unit failure is really a leak somewhere in the circuit slowly bleeding pressure away. A weeping cylinder seal, a loose fitting on the hydraulic line, or a failing hose can all mimic weak pump performance because the system is losing volume faster than the pump can replace it. Before you condemn the power unit itself, trace every line and fitting between the reservoir and the cylinders for wet spots or drips, especially at the base of the posts where hoses take the most abuse from dirt and moisture.
