The Walkthrough We Do Before the Truck Ever Leaves Ames

We do not show up cold. Before a scheduled install, we want photos or a site visit of the bay, a rough ceiling height measurement, a note on where the electrical panel sits, and whatever you know about the concrete. That last one matters more than anything else on the list. Iowa shop floors are a genuine grab bag — we have poured-in-2019 six-inch slabs with rebar, and we have 1950s creamery floors that were four inches of unreinforced concrete over dirt with three additions layered on top. A clear-floor overhead model needs different headroom than a floorplate model, and both need the same thing underneath: solid, thick, cured concrete without a control joint running right where the columns want to sit.

During that walkthrough we also sort out the boring stuff that eats install days. Is there a floor drain in the bay? Is the air line hanging exactly where the overhead beam goes? Does the door opener track cross the lift envelope? Will a truck actually be able to back the crated columns into the building, or are we hand-trucking 800 pounds of steel through a 32-inch service door? Answering those questions early is why our crews rarely leave a job half-finished. If we find a problem we cannot solve on-site — a slab that is too thin, or a ceiling that will not clear the truck you actually work on — we tell you before you spend money, not after. Concrete: The One Thing We Will Not Compromise On

Most two post manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for lighter-capacity models, with thicker and stronger requirements as capacity climbs toward 12,000 and 15,000 pounds. We test rather than assume. A core sample or a hammer-drill depth check takes fifteen minutes and tells us the truth. We have drilled into what a customer swore was a six-inch slab and hit dirt at three and a quarter. That is not a lift problem, it is a physics problem, and no anchor bolt fixes it.

When the slab does not pass, the fix is a cut-and-pour pad — we saw out a section under each column footprint, dig down, tie in rebar, and pour a proper pad that gets a full cure before anchors go in. It adds time and cost, but it is the only honest answer. We also watch for cracks and control joints. Anchors set too close to a joint or a slab edge lose a big chunk of their holding value, so sometimes we shift the whole lift eight inches left to keep every bolt in solid material. Layout, Anchoring, and Getting the Columns Plumb

Once the concrete is cleared, we chalk the layout. Column spacing comes straight off the manufacturer drawing, but bay width, the driver door swing, and where you want to stand while you work all factor in. We aim for a symmetric or asymmetric arm configuration based on what you actually lift — a shop running mostly half-ton pickups and a shop running Priuses want different arm setups, and asymmetric columns rotated for door clearance make a real difference in daily comfort.

Then the columns go up. We drill with a rotary hammer to the specified depth, blow the holes clean — genuinely clean, because dust in an anchor hole cuts holding power dramatically — and set the manufacturer-supplied wedge anchors. Every column gets shimmed plumb, checked with a good level on two faces, and torqued to spec with a calibrated wrench. Shims stack under the base plate, never more than the manual allows, and we re-check plumb after torquing because steel moves. An overhead model gets the crossbeam and equalizer cables run next; a floorplate model gets its base cover and cable routing. Squaring the two columns to each other is what keeps carriages traveling smoothly and cables from wearing on one side, and it is the step careless installers skip.

Hydraulics, Electrical, and the First Cycle

The power unit mounts, the hose gets routed and bled, and we fill with the correct fluid — usually AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil depending on how cold your shop gets in winter, which in Iowa is a real consideration for a garage that drops to 40 degrees overnight. Air lines get connected for the lock releases. Then electrical: most single-phase units want a dedicated 220V circuit on its own breaker, and most three-phase commercial installs need a licensed electrician’s disconnect. We coordinate with your electrician rather than freelancing inside your panel.

First cycle is the moment of truth. We run the lift empty through full travel several times, listening for cable slap and watching lock engagement at every notch. We equalize the cables so both carriages arrive at the same height, then re-check. After that we cycle it with a vehicle on it, verify the locks hold under load, and do a final anchor torque check — anchors seat slightly after their first real load, so that second torque pass is not optional. What Sign-Off and Training Look Like

We do not leave without walking your techs through it. That means showing where the lock release lever is and how it should feel, how to set the arms under a unibody car versus a frame vehicle, what the safety pads are for and why the tall adapters are not optional on lifted trucks, and how to lower the lift correctly so the locks disengage instead of getting slammed. Ten minutes of this saves a lot of grief.

We also hand over the manual and point out the maintenance items that matter: daily visual cable check, monthly anchor torque check for the first few months, cable equalization and lubrication on the manufacturer’s schedule, and an annual inspection. We register the equipment for warranty, note the serial numbers, and log the install so that when you call us in six years for a cable or a lock ladder, we already know exactly what you have.
