When a carriage won’t drop past a certain height, or a lift chatters and clunks on the way down, two post lift safety cam troubleshooting is usually the first job on our service list. The safety cam is the small pivoting arm and toothed bar that lets the carriage lower onto a mechanical rest instead of trusting a cable alone — and when it hangs up, sticks, or fails to release evenly, a shop’s whole workflow grinds to a halt. Start With the Symptom, Not the Part
Good two post lift safety cam troubleshooting begins with an honest look at what’s actually happening, not an assumption about which part is bad. Is the carriage refusing to lower at all past a certain point, or is it lowering but skipping teeth and dropping harder than it should? Is one side of the lift releasing and the other side hanging, so the vehicle sits crooked? Each of these points to a different failure mode, and jumping straight to “replace the cam” without diagnosing first wastes time and money.
We tell our customers to run the lift up and down slowly a few times while watching both columns from the front, not from the operator side. Watch whether both cam arms lift off their bars at the same time when you pull the release cable, and whether they re-engage together on the way down. A lift that’s out of adjustment side-to-side will often look like a cam problem when the real issue is a stretched cable on one column pulling that side out of sync with the other.
Common Causes We Find in the Field
The majority of the safety cam calls we run share a handful of root causes. Dirt, grease, and shop debris packed into the cam pivot point is the single biggest offender — the arm physically can’t swing freely, so it either won’t release or won’t re-engage cleanly. A close second is a stretched or fraying release cable that no longer pulls the cam far enough to clear the bar teeth, which looks exactly like a stuck cam from the operator’s seat but is really a cable problem.
Beyond those two, we regularly find bent cam arms from a lift that’s been dropped onto the safety without warning, worn cam teeth that no longer bite cleanly, and rusted pivot pins on lifts stored in unheated Iowa shops through a few winters without lubrication. Less often, we find a return spring that’s lost tension, letting the cam bounce instead of dropping solidly into the next tooth. Each of these has a distinct fix, which is exactly why we don’t recommend replacing the whole cam assembly until you’ve ruled out the cheaper, simpler causes first.
Checking the Cam Pivot and Cleaning It Right
Before you touch a wrench to anything structural, pull the safety cover and get eyes directly on the pivot pin and arm. Years of grease and grit build up in that pocket, and on Iowa shop floors that also means road salt tracked in on tires during winter months. A stiff brush, a shop rag, and a can of brake cleaner will usually free up light corrosion; heavier rust calls for fine sandpaper on the pin itself.
Once it’s clean, work a dry PTFE-based lubricant or a light machine oil into the pivot — avoid heavy grease here, since it just re-collects debris and defeats the purpose. Cycle the cam by hand a dozen times before putting the lift back into service, checking that it swings freely through its whole arc with no binding or hesitation. If the arm still drags after cleaning and lubrication, the pivot pin itself is likely worn oversized or the arm is bent, and that’s a parts replacement rather than a cleaning fix.
Testing the Release Cable and Linkage
A huge share of what looks like safety cam trouble is actually the release cable. Pull the release handle and watch the cable at the cam arm — it should move the arm through its full range with no slack and no fraying visible along its length. If you see the cable stretch or the housing kink before the arm fully lifts, that’s your answer. A stretched cable can sometimes be re-adjusted at the turnbuckle, but a frayed or kinked one needs to be replaced outright rather than patched.
We also check the little details that get overlooked: the return spring pulling the cable back to a rest position, the routing through any pulleys or guides, and whether the handle mechanism itself has enough travel to fully actuate the cam. On some models a worn handle bracket won’t let you pull the cable far enough even though the cable itself is fine, which is an easy miss if you’re only staring at the cam end.
Left-Right Synchronization Problems
If one column releases cleanly and the other doesn’t, don’t assume you have two bad cams — that’s rare. More often it’s a synchronization issue where one side’s cable has stretched more than the other, or the equalizer cable connecting the two columns has slipped. This throws the carriages out of level and makes the cam on the tighter side bind against its bar even though the cam itself is healthy.
We resolve this by checking equalizer cable tension per the manufacturer’s spec, adjusting turnbuckles evenly, and re-testing with the lift empty before ever loading a vehicle back onto it. When to Inspect Versus When to Service
There’s a real difference between an inspection and a service, and knowing which one you need saves a lot of downtime. Full service, including pivot pin replacement, cable swaps, or return spring changes, is a heavier job that we generally recommend having a certified technician handle, especially on lifts rated for heavier trucks and vans where the margin for error is smaller.
We also recommend logging what you find every time. A cam that needed cleaning three months ago and needs it again now is telling you something about your shop’s dirt and debris levels, or about a lubricant that isn’t holding up.
