A proper two post lift safety inspection takes us about forty-five minutes per lift, and in that time we can usually tell you more about how a shop is run than any tour of the building would. The lifts that fail almost never fail without warning. They fail because nobody was looking. This is what we look for, in the order we look for it, and why each item matters.

Why We Start With the Nameplate, Not the Cables

Every two post lift safety inspection we perform starts at the data plate — usually a metal tag riveted to the powerside column near the base. We want the model number, the serial number, the rated capacity, and the manufacture date. That information determines everything that follows. A 1998 Rotary SPO9 has a different lock ladder geometry, different cable routing, and a different arm restraint design than a 2019 SPOA10. If we guess at the model, we order the wrong parts and waste a trip. Shops are frequently surprised to learn that the tag has been painted over, sanded off, or lost entirely when the unit was moved from a previous location.

The nameplate also tells us whether the equipment is still ALI certified and whether it has ever been recalled or superseded. It gives us the capacity number that we compare against what the shop is actually lifting. We have walked into central Iowa garages where a 9,000 lb asymmetric unit was being used daily on three-quarter-ton crew cabs. Nobody was being reckless on purpose — the truck fleet just got heavier over fifteen years while the lift stayed the same. That conversation is far more valuable than tightening a bolt, and it only happens because we read the tag first.

Cables, Sheaves, and the Failures You Can Feel

Equalizer cables are the single most common reason we get called back out. On a two-post, those cables do not carry the vehicle load — the hydraulics do that — but they keep the carriages level, and a broken one means one side of the car drops until the locks catch. We run a gloved hand along the full length of every cable, looking for broken wire strands, flat spots, kinking near the sheaves, and rust bloom where water has wicked into the core. A single broken strand is a warning. Several in one lay length means replacement, not adjustment.

Sheaves get less attention than they deserve. If a sheave bearing has seized, the cable stops rolling and starts dragging, and it will saw itself apart in a matter of months. We spin each one by hand and listen. We also check cable tension the boring way — raise the lift a couple feet, look at whether the carriages are within a quarter inch of each other, then check that the slack-cable safety still functions. In older units the bottom sheave sits low enough to collect brake dust, salt slush, and floor-scrubber water, which is why Iowa lifts corrode faster at the base than anywhere else on the structure. We pay particular attention to those lower assemblies from November through April.

Locks, Ladders, and Cams — The Heart of the Inspection

If we could only check one system, it would be the locks. A two post lift safety inspection that skips the lock assemblies is not an inspection. We raise the unit through its full travel and listen for a clean, even click at every position on both columns. Then we lower onto a lock and watch for the carriage settling. Then we look at the lock ladder rungs themselves for peening, mushrooming, or elongated engagement faces, and we inspect the cam and pivot pins for wear and for grease that has turned to paste.

Cable-actuated lock releases are a frequent culprit. When the release cable stretches or the sheath fills with debris, the lock dog stops retracting fully and starts skating over the ladder instead of dropping into it. Operators tend to compensate by shoving the handle harder, which accelerates the wear. We cover the specifics in our writeups on two post lift safety lock inspection and safety cam inspection, but the field test is simple: if you cannot hear both locks engage from ten feet away, something is wrong. Air-actuated designs add their own list — leaking cylinders, cracked lines, and shop air that carries too much water. We drain the filter bowl while we are there.

Arms, Restraints, and Adapter Condition

Swing arm restraints are the item most likely to be quietly broken in a busy shop. Their job is to prevent the arms from swinging out from under a vehicle once the lift is raised. We check that each restraint engages with a positive stop, that the gear teeth or pin holes are not rounded off, and that the restraint releases only when the arms are fully lowered. A restraint that has been drilled out, zip-tied open, or welded solid gets flagged immediately.

We also pull each arm through its full sweep, feeling for slop in the pivot pin bore. Some play is normal. A half-inch of vertical rock at the arm tip is not. Then we look at the adapters and pad stacks. Rubber lift pads shrink, harden, and crack, and a hardened pad on a pinch weld is how vehicles get dented and how they slip. Screw pad threads seize with rust; extension towers get bent when someone drives over one. We count what the shop has, note what is missing, and give them the part numbers. Adapters are cheap. Bodywork on a customer’s vehicle is not, and a dropped car ends careers.

Anchors, Concrete, and the Floor Underneath

A two-post is only as strong as what it is bolted to. We torque-check every anchor to the manufacturer’s spec — not tighter, since over-torquing a wedge anchor in marginal concrete will pull the cone and leave you with nothing. We look for spalling and hairline cracks radiating from the base plates, for shims stacked more than the manual allows, and for base plates that no longer sit flat on the slab.

Concrete thickness and cure strength are the part shops least want to hear about. A lot of Iowa garages were poured as four-inch slabs long before anyone planned to install lift equipment, and a 10,000 lb two-post generally wants more than that at the anchor locations. When we find a thin or cracked slab during a two post lift safety inspection, our recommendation is usually a saw-cut and pour of proper footings rather than longer anchors, because longer anchors in bad concrete just fail deeper. We have seen a column visibly lean under load in a shop that swore the floor was fine. That inspection ended with the lift tagged out of service the same afternoon, and the owner later told us it was the cheapest bad news he ever got.

Hydraulics, Power Unit, and Descent Behavior

Next comes the power unit. We check fluid level cold and at full-down, look at fluid color and smell for signs of water contamination, and inspect the reservoir breather. Milky fluid in an unheated Iowa building in February is common and needs to be changed, not topped off. We watch the motor start under load and listen for cavitation, which usually means low fluid or a plugged pickup screen.

Then we chase leaks. Cylinder rod seals weep first, and a rod that shows a wet band after sitting overnight is telling you something. We inspect hose routing for chafe points, look for crushed lines where a floor jack has been rolled over them, and verify that hose ends are not seeping at the crimps. Finally, we time the descent. A lift that drifts down on its own with weight on it has an internal leak or a bad lowering valve, and that is not something to schedule for next month. We also verify the velocity fuse or flow restrictor functions as designed, because that device is what keeps a burst hose from becoming a free-fall. A slow-drift complaint is the single most common call we take in spring, and it is almost always cheaper to fix than shop owners expect.

Documenting It So It Actually Counts

An undocumented two post lift safety inspection has almost no value the day your insurance carrier or OSHA asks a question. We leave every shop with a written record: model, serial, date, tech name, every item checked, every item flagged, and a clear pass, repair, or tag-out designation. If we take a lift out of service, we hang a tag on the control handle and pull the disconnect — not because we like inconveniencing people, but because a lift that looks operational will get used.

ALI and ANSI/ALI ALOIM guidance calls for a qualified annual inspection plus documented daily and monthly operator checks. That daily piece is where most shops fall short, and it is free.
