What each lift actually is

A two post lift is a permanent installation. Two columns get anchored to the concrete, and the vehicle is picked up by four arms that reach under the frame or pinch weld. Everything happens at the vehicle’s lift points, which means the wheels hang free and the underbody is wide open. Symmetric and asymmetric configurations change how the vehicle sits between the columns and how the doors open, and clearfloor versus floorplate models change whether a bar runs overhead or a plate runs across the floor. A Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL10 in a well-poured bay is about as productive as a technician can get on general service work.

Mobile column lifts are the opposite philosophy. You get a set of independent columns — usually four, sometimes six or eight — each on its own wheels with its own hydraulic ram and forks that cradle the tires. They run in sync through a cable or wireless control, they pick the vehicle by the wheels rather than the frame, and when the job is finished you roll them against the wall. Nothing is bolted down and nothing is permanent. That mobility is the entire reason mobile columns exist, and it is why fleet shops, transit garages, and equipment dealers keep buying them.

Floor space and bay layout

Space is usually the first real tiebreaker in the mobile column lift vs two post lift decision, and it cuts both directions. A two post lift permanently claims a bay. The columns are in the same spot on Monday and on Friday, so that bay is a lift bay forever. If you have four bays and put lifts in three of them, you have three lift bays and one flat-floor bay. For most general repair shops that is exactly what they want, because the equipment is always ready and there is no setup time.

Mobile columns claim nothing permanently. They live in a corner, get rolled into position, and disappear again. We have set up shops in central Iowa where one four-column set covers three separate work areas across the week — a truck in the morning, a bus in the afternoon, a fleet van the next day. The tradeoff is setup and teardown. Positioning four columns, aligning forks to the tires, and syncing the controls takes real minutes every single time, and those minutes add up fast if you are doing quick oil changes and brake jobs. Mobile columns also need clear, level, unobstructed floor to roll on. Cracked slabs, floor drains, sloped drive-through pitch, and trench drains all fight you. A two post lift only needs good concrete in two spots.

Capacity and vehicle mix

This is where the answer usually becomes obvious. Two post lifts in a typical shop live in the 9,000 to 15,000 lb range, and heavier commercial models step up from there. That covers cars, pickups, cargo vans, and a lot of medium-duty work. But once you are lifting a Class 6 truck, a school bus, a fire apparatus, or an ag machine with a long wheelbase, the frame-engaging arms and the fixed column spacing stop working.

Mobile columns scale by simply adding columns. A four-column set commonly lands in the 48,000 to 72,000 lb total range depending on the model, and going to six or eight columns pushes you well past that while also letting you support a very long chassis at more points. They also do not care about frame design at all, because they lift by the tires. That matters on vehicles with awkward underbodies, body-on-frame conversions, rocker damage, or aftermarket step bars. On the other hand, wheel-engaging lifts are a problem when the wheels have to come off — brake work, wheel bearings, suspension, tire service. You can work around it with wheel-off adapters and stands, but a two post lift makes wheels-free work effortless, which is why tire and brake shops keep choosing them.

Power, air, and installation reality

Installation is where budgets get surprised. A two post lift needs a dedicated circuit run to the power unit, usually 208-230V single phase, and it needs anchors set into concrete that meets the manufacturer’s spec — typically four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI, and more for higher capacities. If your slab is thin, cracked near the anchor points, or over a heated floor loop, we may need to cut and pour footings. We core test before we quote, because guessing on concrete is how lifts get uninstalled.

Mobile columns need no anchoring and no concrete work, which sounds like a clean win until you look at power. Battery-powered wireless sets have to be charged, and shops that forget the charging routine end up with a dead column in the middle of a job. Corded sets need receptacles positioned where you actually plan to work, and depending on the model that may be 208-230V single or three phase. We have run new outlets in three corners of a building so a single set could be used flexibly. Neither option is install-free; they just move the cost from concrete to electrical.

Cost over the life of the lift

On a purchase-price basis, a two post lift is almost always the cheaper way to get a vehicle in the air. A quality commercial two post package plus installation lands in a tier that most independent shops can absorb without financing. A four-column mobile set costs multiples of that, because you are buying four complete hydraulic machines with synchronized controls instead of one machine with two columns.

Where mobile columns earn the money back is utilization. One set can serve several bays, several buildings, or an outdoor pad at a fleet yard. If the alternative is installing four heavy-duty two post or inground lifts, the mobile set can be the lower total investment while also being relocatable when the operation moves or the building lease ends. Long-term costs differ too. A two post lift has cables, sheaves, arm restraints, and lock systems that need annual inspection and eventual replacement. Mobile columns have four times the hydraulic components, four sets of casters, batteries or cords, and control electronics — more to maintain, though each item is simpler. The vehicles are heavy, long, and varied, the shop often does drive-through work, and one set covers the whole floor.
