Every shop owner thinks they’d notice a problem lift. The truth is, when you walk past the same equipment fifty times a day, your brain stops actually seeing it. A written two post safety inspection checklist forces you to physically touch and test each component instead of just eyeballing the whole unit. That’s the difference between catching a hairline crack in a carrier weldment and finding out about it when the vehicle comes down wrong.
We also see this matter for liability. If a lift fails and there’s no documented inspection history, that’s a hard conversation with an insurer or an attorney. A dated checklist with initials on it shows you were doing your part. Cables, Cable Guides, and Pulleys

We also check that cables are seated properly in their guides and that the guide sheaves spin freely instead of grinding or binding.
Pulleys wear out from the inside, so a pulley that looks fine can still have a worn bearing that’s letting the cable ride unevenly. We check for side-to-side play and listen for grinding under load. Locking Mechanisms and Latch Pawls

We manually cycle the locks on both columns to confirm they engage cleanly into every notch, not just some of them. A lock that skips a notch or hangs up partway is one of the more dangerous findings we run into, because it can look engaged while only partially catching.
We also check the return springs on the pawls. Weak or broken springs mean the lock might not drop fully under normal operation, especially in cold shop conditions where lubricants thicken up. Arms, Pads, and Restraint Systems

A pad that’s collapsing or sitting crooked under a vehicle’s weight can shift a car off its lift points mid-service.
We also inspect the arm restraint pins and stops that keep the arms from swinging out once they’re loaded. On older lifts we’ve seen these worn to the point where the arm can rotate slightly under weight, which changes your contact point without anyone noticing. Hydraulic System and Fluid Condition
We check hydraulic hoses and fittings for weeping, cracking, or chafing against the columns, and we check fluid level and condition in the power unit. We also run the lift through a full cycle to listen for unusual pump noise, which often points to a failing seal before it becomes a leak you can see.
Cylinder rods get checked for scoring or pitting where they extend past the seal. A rod that’s scored will eventually chew through a new seal too, so this often means addressing the rod, not just swapping a seal kit. Anchor Bolts, Concrete, and Column Plumb
None of the above matters if the lift isn’t anchored properly. We torque-check anchor bolts to spec and look closely at the concrete around each base plate for cracking, spalling, or gaps that suggest the anchor has worked loose over time. We also verify each column is still plumb and that the floor hasn’t settled unevenly between the two bases. Building a Realistic Inspection Schedule
A checklist only works if someone actually runs it on a schedule. We recommend a quick visual and functional check before the first lift of every shift — locks, cables, and obvious leaks take two minutes to eyeball. Then a full documented inspection covering everything above should happen at least annually, or more often for shops running multiple shifts or heavier vehicles like trucks and vans.
