Start With the Work, Not the Lift
Most people start shopping by looking at pictures. We would rather start with a list of the ten jobs you do most often. If that list is brakes, suspension, exhaust, tires, wheel bearings, and oil changes, you are describing a two-post lift. Wheels-free access is the whole point of the design — arms under the pinch welds, tires hanging, nothing between you and the undercarriage. A tech can pull a rotor without repositioning anything, and that saves real minutes on every ticket.
If your list is different — storing a project car, doing driveline and transmission work, alignments, fluid service on a fleet of pickups, or parking two vehicles in one footprint — the four-post is the better tool. Drive-on runways mean no arm setup, no pad height guessing, and no worrying about a rocker panel that has seen a decade of Iowa road salt. That last point matters here more than people expect. Measure Your Ceiling Before You Fall in Love
Ceiling height kills more lift plans than budget does. Four-post lifts have their own vertical math. Runway height, plus vehicle height, plus a few inches of safety margin, plus — if you are stacking — the height of the car parked underneath. A storage-oriented four-post in a 10-foot garage usually means a sedan on top and a sedan below, not a Suburban over a truck. We ask people to measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak: garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, and trusses all steal usable space. What Your Concrete Will and Will Not Allow
Both styles bolt to the slab, but a two-post concentrates enormous load into two small footprints, which is why anchor requirements are stricter. Manufacturers generally want a minimum thickness in the four-to-six-inch range at a specified compressive strength, cured, unreinforced by cracks or expansion joints running through the anchor pattern. We core-test when there is any doubt. In older Iowa shops built in stages, it is common to find one bay poured well and the bay next to it poured thin.
A four-post spreads the same vehicle weight across four columns and a pair of runways, so the per-anchor demand is lower. Some portable four-post models are rated to sit on a sound slab with minimal or no anchoring at all, which is why they are the go-to for rented garages and for anybody who might move in a few years. Throughput: The Number Nobody Calculates
In a commercial bay, the lift is a production tool and seconds compound. A two-post with good asymmetric arms takes a tech maybe forty-five seconds to set up on a familiar vehicle. A four-post takes near zero setup — drive on, chock, raise. Run the math on your own ticket mix. A general repair shop doing mostly brakes and tires gains hours per week with two-posts. It has to let you park normally when it is down, not eat the walkway to the freezer, and ideally add a parking space rather than take one. That pushes most residential buyers toward a four-post, and specifically toward a caster-equipped model they can roll aside in the spring.
That said, we install plenty of two-posts in home shops for people who genuinely work on cars rather than store them. If you are doing your own brakes, exhaust, and suspension on three vehicles, a two-post is more pleasant to use every single time and takes up less floor when parked. The compromise plenty of our customers land on is a mid-rise scissor for wheel work plus a four-post for storage. Whichever direction you lean, get the electrical planned early — most single-phase power units want a dedicated 220V circuit, and running that after drywall is a bad afternoon.
Capacity, Vehicles, and Room to Grow
Buy for the heaviest thing you will own in ten years, not the heaviest thing in the driveway today. A 10,000 lb two-post covers essentially every half-ton and most three-quarter-ton pickups. Move to duallies, box trucks, ambulances, or long-wheelbase vans and you are into 12,000 to 18,000 lb territory, longer arms, taller columns, and a wider drive-through. Four-post capacities scale the same way, but you also have to watch runway length and wheelbase range — a short-runway storage lift will not safely hold a crew cab long bed.
We also ask about EVs now, because battery packs change the game.
