Every few weeks somebody calls us from a farm auction, a closing shop, or a Facebook Marketplace driveway asking whether the lift they’re standing next to is worth hauling home, and the conversation always ends up in the same place: they need a used car lift inspection checklist they can actually work through in twenty minutes with a flashlight and a tape measure. We’re Auto Lift Services out of Ames, Iowa, and we install, move, and repair used equipment across the state every month. We’ve seen bargains that outlived their new-in-crate neighbors, and we’ve seen “barely used” two-posts with cracked welds hiding under fresh spray paint. This is the walkthrough we give people over the phone, written out.

Start With The Data Plate, Not The Paint

The first line on our used car lift inspection checklist isn’t a mechanical item at all — it’s the serial and capacity plate. Find it, photograph it, and read every line. You want the manufacturer, model number, serial number, rated capacity, and ideally a date code. That plate tells us whether parts still exist, whether the lift was ever ALI certified, and whether the seller’s description matches reality. We’ve had people describe a lift as a “10,000 lb two-post” that turned out to be a 7,000 lb unit from a discontinued importer with no parts channel anywhere in North America. That’s not a bargain at any price.

If the plate is missing, gone, painted over, or ground off, slow way down. It happens legitimately on lifts that spent thirty years in a wash bay, but it also happens when someone is hiding the origin of equipment they know is unsupported. In that case we look for casting marks on the carriages, the shape of the arm assemblies, and the style of the power unit — those often identify a Rotary or a Challenger even with no plate. Identifying the model correctly is the difference between a lift you can keep in service for another fifteen years and a two-ton lawn ornament you’ll pay to have hauled away.

Columns, Baseplate, And Structural Welds

Structure is where a used lift either passes or fails outright, because it’s the one category you cannot repair economically. On a two-post, run your hand and your eye down every weld on both columns — especially the base weld where the column meets the baseplate, and the top where the crossbeam or overhead assembly mounts. You’re looking for cracked weld beads, rippled or oil-canned steel, and any spot where paint has flaked in a straight line, which is a classic sign of a flexing crack underneath. Bring a bright light. Shop grime hides a lot.

Next check the columns for plumb and for twist. Even sitting unbolted on a concrete floor you can usually see if a column has been pulled out of square by a bad load or a driveway impact. Look at the anchor holes in the baseplate: elongated, torn, or previously-repaired holes tell you the lift moved under load at some point, which is a serious history item. On a four-post, sight down each runway for sag and check the ramps and cross-tubes for bent flanges. We’ve turned people away from otherwise clean lifts because a forklift had kissed one column years earlier, and no amount of paint fixes bent structural steel. Structure fails the whole deal, full stop.

Cables, Sheaves, Chains, And Equalization

Lifting cables are consumables, and on a used purchase you should assume you’re buying replacements. Still, the condition of the existing cables tells you how the machine was treated. Run a rag along each cable — snags mean broken wires. Look for flat spots, birdcaging, rust bleeding out of the strands, and kinks near the terminations. Then look at the sheaves. Grooved, sharp-edged, or seized sheaves eat new cables fast, and a sheave that won’t spin by hand is a sign nobody greased anything in a decade.

On chain-driven two-posts and most four-post lifts, the same logic applies to the chain and its anchor bolts. Check for stretched links, side-plate wear, and rust that’s welded links stiff. While you’re in there, test the equalization: if the lift can be powered up on site, watch whether both carriages or both runways rise together. A quarter-inch of drift is normal on an older machine; two inches means someone has been chasing an equalization problem and losing. Cables, chains, and sheaves are all available for the major brands, so factor a replacement set into your offer rather than walking away. Budget realistically — a full cable set plus labor on a mid-size two-post is a real line item, not pocket change.

Hydraulics: Cylinder, Power Unit, And Hoses

Wipe the cylinder rod and the base of each cylinder clean, then have someone raise and lower the lift while you watch. A wet rod that stays wet is a failed seal. Weeping at the base fitting is usually just a fitting, but staining that runs down the column paint in a wide fan means it’s been leaking a long while. Cylinders can be resealed or replaced on nearly every mainstream brand, so a leak is a negotiation point, not a dealbreaker — but you want to know before you pay.

Look at the power unit next. Pop the reservoir cap and check the fluid: milky fluid means water intrusion, black and gritty means it ran hot and dirty for years. Check the motor’s electrical data — single phase versus three phase matters enormously if you’re putting this lift in a home garage, and we’ve watched people buy a great three-phase lift they can’t power. Inspect hoses for cracking at the crimps and dry rot along the runs, and check that the lowering valve and pressure-relief work. Safety Locks, Arm Restraints, And Controls

This is the section of a used car lift inspection checklist people skip, and it’s the one that keeps techs alive. Cycle the lift through its full travel if power is available and listen for the locks to click into every position. Then set it down on the locks and confirm both sides are seated at the same height. Look at the lock ladders or racks for chipped, rounded, or mushroomed teeth, and check the lock release cables and air lines for the cracked, brittle look old air line gets after a decade of shop heat.

On two-posts, grab each arm and try to rotate it while the lift is at the ground and again slightly raised. The arm restraint should engage and hold once the lift is off the floor. Worn restraint gears are common and replaceable, but a restraint that’s been intentionally disabled tells you a lot about the previous owner’s habits. Check the control handle or button box for missing covers and taped-up wiring, verify the lift has functioning overhead shutoff or limit hardware where it’s supposed to, and look for the ALI gold label. Missing safety decals aren’t a structural problem, but we replace them on every install because they’re what an inspector and your insurance carrier look for first.

Concrete, Ceiling, And Whether It Fits Your Shop

The best lift in the world is the wrong purchase if your slab or your ceiling can’t take it. Before you commit, measure your available bay: column-to-column width, overall footprint, and — for a two-post — the clear height you need, remembering that the overhead beam sits well above the column tops. Four-posts need the runway length plus room for approach ramps. In Iowa we run into a lot of older garages with 9-foot ceilings where a clear-floor two-post simply won’t work, and an asymmetric or a mid-rise scissor is the honest answer.

Then there’s concrete. Most two-posts want a minimum thickness and strength of slab, with adequate distance from any expansion joint or slab edge, and older residential pours frequently don’t meet it. Drilling a test hole in an inconspicuous spot is the only way to know for sure. If the slab is thin, you’re looking at cutting and pouring pads, which is real money and worth knowing before you haul equipment home. Paperwork, Removal, And What We’d Pay

Two things get overlooked once a buyer decides they want the lift: how it comes out, and what documentation comes with it. Removal is often the single biggest hidden cost. A two-post has to be unbolted, walked down, and loaded, and the overhead assembly comes apart at height. A four-post is heavier than people expect. An inground lift is a different universe entirely — we generally advise walking away from used inground equipment unless you have a very specific plan for it. Ask who’s disassembling it, who’s loading it, and who eats the cost if something bends on the way out.

For paperwork, ask for the original manual, any installation records, and — most valuable of all — any annual inspection reports. A lift with a documented inspection history from a commercial shop is worth meaningfully more than an unknown-history unit, and it shortens the work on your own used car lift inspection checklist considerably. As for value: we tell people to price a used lift as the structure only, then add up cables, seals, fluid, anchors, decals, and installation labor as separate line items. If that total lands near the price of new equipment with a warranty, buy new. If it lands well under, you found a deal.
