Weight capacity matters here too. If you’re pulling transmissions out of farm trucks, dually pickups, or older tractors moved into the shop, don’t buy for your daily driver — buy for the heaviest thing you’ll ever put on it. We generally recommend building in headroom above your heaviest vehicle’s actual weight, not right up against the rated limit, because that capacity number assumes ideal conditions and even distribution.

That said, mobile columns come at a different price point and serve a different volume of use than a basic two-post. For a shop doing occasional transmission work on one or two personal vehicles, a fixed lift is usually the more economical and simpler choice.
