If you’re a weekend mechanic in southern Minnesota shopping for a vehicle lift for home garage use, the first fork in the road isn’t brand or price — it’s overhead versus baseplate. We talk to hobbyists constantly who want to do their own CV axle and half-shaft replacements instead of paying shop labor rates, and most of them don’t realize the overhead-vs-baseplate decision will affect their ceiling clearance, their concrete requirements, and even how comfortably they can swing a breaker bar under the car. Item One: Measure Your Actual Ceiling Height, Not the Guess

The single biggest disqualifier for an overhead-style 2-post lift is ceiling height, and it’s the first thing to check before you fall in love with any specific model. Overhead lifts route the hydraulic cylinder and safety mechanism through a crossbar at the top of the columns, which typically requires 12 to 14 feet of clearance depending on the model and how high you want to raise the vehicle. Southern Minnesota garages built in the last couple decades often have 9 to 10 foot walls, sometimes a bit more in pole barns, but plenty fall short of what an overhead unit needs.

Baseplate lifts solve this by moving the hydraulic and cable routing down to a base unit at floor level between the columns, which usually drops the required height to around 10 to 11 feet. If you’re working with a shorter garage and still want a genuine vehicle lift for home garage CV axle work, baseplate is very often the only configuration that physically fits. Measure from the floor to the lowest point of your ceiling — including any garage door tracks or ceiling storage — and bring that number to us before you shop models, not after.

Item Two: Check What the Baseplate Does to Your Floor Space

The tradeoff for a lower ceiling requirement is a baseplate running across the floor between the two columns, and for CV axle and half-shaft work specifically, that matters. The baseplate can interfere with a floor jack, a creeper, or where you’d want to set a transmission jack if the job expands. Some baseplate designs include a walk-through gap, others don’t, and if you’re the kind of hobbyist who plans to do more than axle swaps eventually — brake work, exhaust, suspension — that floor obstruction is worth thinking through now.

Overhead lifts leave the floor completely clear underneath, which a lot of serious hobbyists prefer once they’ve worked around a baseplate for a season and found it in the way. If your garage has the ceiling height to support it, overhead gives you the most usable floor space for axle work and beyond. We walk this tradeoff through with every southern Minnesota customer because it’s genuinely a judgment call based on your ceiling, not a clear better-or-worse answer.

Item Three: Confirm Your Concrete Can Handle Either Option

Both overhead and baseplate 2-post lifts anchor into the slab, and southern Minnesota’s freeze-thaw cycles mean concrete condition varies a lot more than in warmer climates — cracks, heaving, and older pours are common even in garages that look fine on the surface. A 7,000 to 9,000-pound lift, which covers the vast majority of passenger vehicles doing CV axle work, generally needs at least 4 inches of solid, crack-free concrete for anchor bolts to hold rated torque, and we always test this on-site rather than assume.

Baseplate models distribute some of that load differently since the connecting plate ties the two columns together at the base, which can be more forgiving on marginal concrete in certain cases, though it’s not a guaranteed fix for bad slab. If your garage floor is original to a building from the 1970s or 80s, get it evaluated before ordering a vehicle lift for home garage installation — a reinforcement pad is a lot cheaper to plan for upfront than to retrofit after a lift is already anchored.

Item Four: Match Capacity to What You Actually Drive

Weekend hobbyists doing CV axle and half-shaft work rarely need extreme capacity, but southern Minnesota garages often house a mix of a daily driver and a truck or SUV for winter, and that mix should drive your capacity decision. A 9,000-pound lift covers nearly every passenger car and most half-ton trucks with room to spare, while a 7,000-pound unit is plenty if you’re strictly working on sedans and smaller crossovers. Buying more capacity than you need adds cost and often adds footprint without any real benefit for the work you’re doing.

Arm style matters too — asymmetric arms make it easier to get doors open and position the vehicle for good access to the front hubs and axles, which is exactly where half-shaft work happens. If your garage sees both cars and trucks, ask about arm reach and adapter height so the lift geometry works for both without you fighting the arms every time you swap vehicles.

Item Five: Price Out Freight and Install for Rural Delivery

Rural southern Minnesota delivery is a different logistics problem than a suburban driveway. Longer gravel roads, farm-style pole buildings with wider door openings but sometimes lower eave heights, and trucking routes that don’t always run liftgate-equipped trailers on every stop all factor into what delivery actually costs and how it happens. Ask any supplier whether they’ve delivered into your specific area before, and ask what equipment the delivery truck will have. Either way, clear the garage completely before the crew arrives — vehicles, storage, workbenches near the install footprint should all be out of the way so the crew isn’t working around obstacles.

Watching the anchor torque testing and the leveling process gives you a much better understanding of the equipment you’re about to rely on for years of CV axle and half-shaft work. It also gives you a chance to ask questions about maintenance schedules and safety lock operation directly from the people who just set the lift, rather than trying to piece it together from a manual later.

Item Seven: Don’t Skip the Post-Install Maintenance Conversation

Once your vehicle lift for home garage is installed, the checklist isn’t over — hydraulic fluid levels, cable tension, and anchor torque all need periodic checks, especially in the first few months as everything settles.
