RVs and dual-axle trailers don’t fit neatly on standard two-post or four-post equipment sized for passenger vehicles and light trucks. Wheelbases run long, axle spacing varies wildly between manufacturers, and a fixed-rail lift that works for one trailer on the lot can be completely wrong for the next one that rolls in. The Davenport shop had been managing with a mix of jack stands and a single aging in-ground lift that couldn’t reliably handle their heavier rigs.

Install Day: Six Columns, One Long Afternoon
Install day for this shop meant positioning and calibrating a six-column set rated well into heavy-duty territory — enough combined capacity to handle a fully loaded Class A motorhome without derating individual columns. Because the shop’s slab was already solid, level commercial concrete, we skipped any concrete work and went straight to electrical hookup and column placement.
Calibration on a six-column mobile system takes longer than a standard four-column passenger-vehicle set because every column has to lift and lower in sync regardless of uneven weight distribution across a long wheelbase. We ran multiple load tests with an actual trailer on-site before signing off, checking that the system held level under an asymmetric load — a motorhome with a full water tank on one side, for example — since that’s a real-world condition RV shops deal with constantly.
First Months: Learning the Workflow
The first few weeks after install were mostly about the shop’s techs learning to think in terms of column positioning rather than fixed lift points. Passenger-vehicle techs are used to driving onto a rail and locking arms under fixed points; mobile column work means walking the vehicle in, positioning each column at the correct wheel, and running the lift sequence column by column or as a synced set.
The shop settled into a routine where one tech handles column positioning while a second confirms tire contact and lock engagement before anyone starts work underneath. That two-person check became standard procedure after the first month, not because anything went wrong, but because the owner wanted a second set of eyes on a heavier, more expensive vehicle than the setup was originally designed around in most training materials.
Differential Service: What Changed
Differential fluid service was the use case that justified the purchase, and it’s also where the difference has been most obvious. One Year Later: Maintenance and What We’d Do Differently
A year into daily use, the shop’s mobile column set has held up well under heavy-duty commercial use, with routine maintenance limited mostly to battery charging discipline on their wireless columns and periodic lock and cable inspections we handle on a service schedule. We’ve replaced a couple of minor wear parts, which is normal for any equipment running this many lift cycles across a full RV season.
If we were planning this project again, the one change would be ordering an extra pair of columns from day one rather than adding them later, since the shop has since started servicing a few heavier commercial trailers that push close to the original set’s combined capacity.
