Why Concrete Thickness Determines Your Vehicle Post Options

A vehicle post transfers the full weight of a vehicle, plus dynamic load during raising and lowering, down through four to six anchor points into your slab. If that slab is too thin, the anchors can pull out under load, and in the worst case the whole column can tip. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of concrete for lighter-duty two-post lifts, but we generally recommend four and a half to six inches for anything you plan to use regularly, especially in a home garage doing annual state inspection work or routine maintenance on a heavier truck or SUV.

The reason spec sheets give a range rather than one number comes down to concrete strength and rebar, not just thickness. A four-inch slab poured with proper rebar and rated at 3,000 PSI or better can outperform a six-inch slab of weak, unreinforced concrete poured decades ago. Before you buy anything, we ask every home buyer the same three questions: how old is the slab, was it reinforced, and has it ever cracked or heaved. Those answers tell us more than the thickness number alone, and they’re the difference between a same-day installation and a conversation about pouring a new pad first.

Rebar: The Detail Most Buyers Never Think About

Rebar reinforcement gives concrete the tensile strength it lacks on its own, and it’s what keeps anchor points from cracking outward under repeated load cycles. A slab poured without rebar, or with rebar spaced too far apart, can look perfectly solid on the surface while still being unsuitable for a vehicle post installation. This is especially common in garages built before the 1990s, when rebar mesh wasn’t always standard in residential pours.

If you don’t know whether your garage floor has rebar, there are a few ways to find out before we show up. Building permits or the original construction plans sometimes specify the pour spec. A concrete contractor can also do a quick core test if you want certainty before committing to a lift purchase. Short of that, we look for secondary clues on-site: slab age, visible control joints, and how the concrete responds to a test anchor. We’d rather find out during a site visit than after a column is already anchored and wobbling.

What a Site Visit Actually Checks

When we come out to an Iowa City home before a vehicle post installation, we’re not just eyeballing the floor. We check slab thickness with a probe at the edge of an existing expansion joint or drain, look for visible cracking or spalling, and confirm ceiling height clearance for full-rise columns. A four-post configuration spreads weight across a larger footprint than a two-post column design, which sometimes makes it viable on a slab that wouldn’t safely support two-post anchor points. This is one of the most common reasons we steer first-time home buyers toward four-post options even when a two-post setup was their original plan.

Pouring a new pad isn’t as expensive as most people assume, especially if it’s a targeted 8-by-14-foot section rather than the whole garage floor. Sizing the Right Vehicle Post for Your Vehicles

We measure this on-site because a spec sheet number without an actual tape measure in your garage leads to returns and disappointment.

Getting Ready for Annual State Inspections at Home

A home vehicle post makes annual state inspection prep dramatically easier — you can check brakes, suspension, exhaust, and undercarriage rust from a standing position instead of a creeper. Iowa doesn’t require a lift for inspection work, but having one turns an afternoon under the car into a twenty-minute check, which is exactly why so many of our home buyers cite inspection season as their main motivation for buying.

Once installed, plan on the same maintenance discipline a commercial shop follows: annual cable and cylinder checks, periodic lubrication, and keeping anchor bolts torqued to spec.
