When a vehicle service lift stops working
The first sign is almost always subtle. The lift stops a foot or two short of full descent. It creeps down overnight when a truck is parked on it. One column moves half a beat slower than the other. Shops that catch these signs early get a repair. Shops that ignore them get a bay out of service.
The story we hear most often at Iowa dealerships is a vehicle service lift right next to the tire machine — the bay where the lift gets more cycles than any other because tires roll through constantly. That bay is the one to watch. The east-side inground at a Ford dealer, the tire bay at a Chevy store, the wheel-alignment lift at an independent — same story, different logo. Inground lifts and dealership service bays
Inground lifts still run in a lot of Iowa dealerships from the era when they were the standard. They are excellent when they work — clean bay floor, full arm access, no columns to walk around. When they fail, though, the repair is usually a bigger job than an above-ground because the cylinders sit below the floor.
Common inground failures: lowering valve stuck (lift will not descend fully), packing gland leak (fluid weeping around the plunger), air trapped in the hydraulic (lift jerks or stops partway), safety lock not engaging (lift will not hold height). We diagnose each of these on site. Some are a service call and a valve rebuild; some are a full cylinder pull, which is a bigger project. Above-ground two-post and four-post replacements
When a shop decides to replace an aging inground or a worn-out above-ground lift, the modern replacement is usually a Rotary or Challenger two-post or four-post. Two-post if the work is mostly wheels-off (brakes, tires, suspension). Four-post drive-on if the work is more storage, alignment, or fleet PM.

Diagnosing hydraulic and cable issues
Most repair calls fall into two buckets: hydraulic and cable. Hydraulic issues show as slow lifting, drifting down, jerky motion, or fluid on the floor. Root causes are worn cylinder packing, contaminated fluid, a stuck lowering valve, or air in the lines. Each is a discrete fix — the trick is diagnosing correctly the first visit so you do not chase symptoms.
Cable issues show as uneven lifting, one column trailing the other, or in the worst case a broken strand you can see with a flashlight. Cables stretch over time and every vehicle service lift with cables has a manufacturer replacement interval — typically five to seven years for commercial use. Rotary and Challenger service lifts we stock

Installation and PM in Iowa
