An RV and trailer service shop in Ames bought a vehicle storage lift last winter to stage restoration projects and do metalwork on frame rails they could not reach at floor level. This is a first-year ownership story: install week, the daily rhythm, and the hydraulic cylinder seal weep that showed up at month eight. Restoration work is hard on a lift because vehicles sit stored under torch and grinder sparks, dust settles into cable pulleys, and cylinders cycle less frequently than in a daily service shop, which paradoxically wears seals faster. Install week for a restoration-shop vehicle storage lift

The Ames RV shop had a 40-by-60 building with a 5-inch reinforced slab left over from a previous lift install. Ideal foundation. Ceiling clearance was 15 feet at the peak, which gave us plenty of headroom for the 82-inch rise vehicle storage lift they chose. Install ran two days. Day one was column positioning, base plate bolting, and cable stringing. Day two was hydraulic hookup, safety lock verification, and a full-cycle load test with a project frame they had ready to lift.

We recommended a drip pan set on the runways because restoration work tends to drip solvents and lubricants that would otherwise land on the shop floor. Owner took the drip pans. We also specified stainless steel safety chain retainers because the shop uses cutting torches occasionally and standard steel chain degrades under repeated heat exposure. Little decisions like that pay off across the life of the lift. By day three the first project frame was stored at cable-tension height and the shop was already scheduling the next intake vehicle.

Daily use patterns and stored load duration

Unlike a service shop where a lift cycles 20 to 40 times a day, a restoration shop cycles two or three times a week. A frame goes up, sits at working height for days or weeks while metal work progresses, and comes down when the project rotates. That duty cycle is easier on cables and mechanical parts but harder on hydraulic seals, because seals wear preferentially when the piston sits stationary against a small band of the cylinder bore.

We warned the owner at install that a low-cycle vehicle storage lift is more likely to develop a seal weep in year one than a high-cycle one, and we recommended a monthly full-travel cycle even when no project needed it. He did that for the first six months, then got busy and skipped a couple. Nothing dramatic happened. But at month eight, during a routine morning power-up, he noticed a faint sheen of hydraulic fluid on the top of the cylinder rod where it enters the barrel. That is the classic first sign of a rod seal weep, and we were on-site inside 48 hours.

Diagnosing the cylinder seal weep

Rod seal weeps are usually visible as a wet band on the rod that will not wipe clean, and they get worse when the lift is held under load for long periods. On his lift the drip rate was slow, roughly a teaspoon over a 12-hour hold at working height. That is well inside the safety margin, meaning the mechanical safety locks would hold the load even if the hydraulic pressure dropped to zero. But a weeping seal is a maintenance signal, not a wait-and-see signal, and we scheduled the rebuild for the following weekend.

We also inspected the rod itself for scoring. Rod scoring is the reason seals fail early, and it usually comes from grit that infiltrated the wiper during storage or grinding operations. His rod had a faint circumferential mark at 22 inches of extension that we could feel with a fingernail but not measure with calipers. That is borderline. We could rebuild the seal and expect two to three more years, or we could replace the rod at the same time and expect 15 years. Owner chose the seal rebuild for cost reasons, with a plan to revisit if the seal failed prematurely.

Ordering the vehicle storage lift cylinder rebuild kit

We stock rebuild kits for every major lift brand in our Ames warehouse. His unit was a standard 3.5-inch bore cylinder with a 2-inch rod, and the kit included a rod seal, wiper seal, static o-ring, and a backup ring set. Kit cost was in the low double-digit dollars. If we had needed to ship a full replacement cylinder, that would have run into the mid-hundreds and taken a week. Rebuild kits are the right first move for any weep that is not accompanied by rod damage or barrel scoring.

We also refreshed the hydraulic fluid at the same time. Original fluid had roughly 800 hours of service and showed slight discoloration but no water contamination. We drained the reservoir, replaced the fluid with fresh AW-32, changed the return-line filter, and bled the system through three full-travel cycles. Total parts and labor for the seal rebuild and fluid service came in at a fraction of the cost of a full cylinder swap. That is why we push seal service over cylinder replacement whenever the rod is salvageable.

The rebuild procedure and safety sequence

A cylinder rebuild on a vehicle storage lift starts with unloading the lift completely and lowering it to the deck. We then relieved the hydraulic pressure through the manual bleed screw, disconnected the hose, and unbolted the cylinder from its trunnion mounts. On a four-post lift there is one master cylinder and slave cables that carry the runway load, so we do not have to jack the runways to remove the cylinder. That is a huge advantage over two-post lifts where cylinder work requires supplemental supports.

Once the cylinder was on the bench, we clamped the barrel in a soft-jaw vise, removed the gland nut with the correct tool for the brand, and slid the rod out. Old seals came out in one piece. We cleaned the rod with a non-abrasive pad, honed the barrel bore lightly, installed the new seal set with the correct orientation, reassembled the gland, and pressure-tested to 3,000 PSI for 30 minutes. No leaks. Back in the lift by end of day, cycled ten times under load the next morning, and the owner had his shop back.

Preventive maintenance to avoid the next rebuild

After the rebuild we set the owner up with a preventive schedule that should push the next intervention out to year five or beyond. Monthly full-travel cycle, quarterly rod inspection, annual hydraulic fluid sample sent to our lab for analysis. Fluid sampling costs a small amount and it catches contamination and additive breakdown before either shows up as a weep. We built the sampling schedule into his calendar so he does not have to remember it.

The other preventive step is wiper protection. Restoration work throws grit constantly. We fabricated a simple cloth boot that covers the rod when the lift is at rest but retracts cleanly when the lift cycles. That kept dust off the wiper seal and eliminated the primary cause of premature seal wear. Owner has run the lift for a full second year since the rebuild with no weep return and no rod scoring progression. Simple protection, big payoff. This is the kind of small detail that separates a lift that lasts a decade from one that lasts three.
