Single Phase vs Three Phase: The First Question

The first branch of the electrical decision tree for a vehicle storage lift is whether your shop has single-phase or three-phase power. Almost every residential and small commercial building in the Des Moines metro is single-phase 240 volt service. Larger industrial shops and some older commercial buildings are three-phase 208 or 480 volt. The vehicle storage lift you order needs a motor that matches the power available, and swapping motors after delivery is not fun.

For a restoration shop working on classic cars and modern daily drivers, single-phase 240 volt is almost always the right pick. Every reputable manufacturer builds single-phase versions of their common four-post storage lifts, and the pump speed is fine for storage duty. Where three-phase makes sense is when you are running a shop full of other three-phase equipment (rotary screw compressor, tire changer, alignment rack) and you want everything on the same service. Amperage and Breaker Sizing

Once you know the phase, the next question is amperage. A single-phase 240 volt vehicle storage lift typically pulls 20 to 30 amps at motor start, dropping to lower steady-state during the lift cycle. We spec the circuit for the start current, not the run current. That usually means a 30 amp double-pole breaker feeding a dedicated circuit to the lift with 10-gauge wire, or larger depending on the run distance from the panel.

Voltage drop over long runs is where restoration shops in older Des Moines commercial buildings get bitten. If the panel is fifty feet from the lift and you run 12-gauge wire because it was on the truck, the motor sees less voltage than it needs and it lugs. Over time that shortens motor life. On installs where the run is over forty feet, we spec 8-gauge or larger. Give us the run distance from your panel to the lift location and we will size the wire correctly. Your electrician can pull it, we do not need to be the ones running conduit, but the spec needs to be right.

Panel Capacity: The Hidden Problem

You have a 200 amp panel. That should be plenty for a vehicle storage lift, right? Sometimes. The problem is what else is on the panel. If your restoration shop has a 60-amp welder, a 40-amp compressor, a 30-amp HVAC unit, and shop lighting, adding a 30-amp lift circuit can push you over. We do not have to add every circuit at nameplate, but if you are near capacity, adding another dedicated 30-amp branch is exactly where an electrician will pause and recommend a subpanel or a service upgrade.

For most Des Moines metro restoration shops we visit, the panel is 200 amp and comfortable. For older buildings running 100 amp service, adding a vehicle storage lift is usually the trigger to upgrade to 200 amp. That is a several-thousand-dollar project and it needs to happen before the lift install day, not on install day. Transmission Service on a Four-Post Storage Lift

The specific reason many restoration shops need a vehicle storage lift instead of a two-post is transmission work on classic vehicles. Old drivetrains are heavy, awkward, and you want them coming down onto a transmission jack, not swinging free. The four-post gives you a stable platform, and adding rolling jacks under the vehicle lets you take suspension load off so cross-member bolts break free without fighting spring tension. For gearbox R&R on a 1970s muscle car, that combination is worth its weight.

The transmission jack itself is the accessory most restoration shops forget. A hydraulic transmission jack with a fifteen-hundred pound rating rides underneath the vehicle storage lift, catches the trans as you unbolt it, and lets you wheel it out to the bench. We stock them and they pair well with the four-post configuration. When you call about a lift for transmission work, ask about the jack in the same conversation and we will bundle the freight so you are not paying twice.

Air Line Kit for Locks and Tools

The air line kit is a factory option on most four-post vehicle storage lifts that plumbs compressed air up one of the columns and provides a quick-connect at the runway height. It powers the pneumatic lock release (which is what lets the lift lower off the mechanical locks) and it puts an air outlet at the vehicle so you can run impacts and blow guns without dragging a hose from the wall.

On any restoration shop lift we quote, the air line kit is a checkbox we ask about specifically. It is a one-time install expense at the time of build, adding one when the lift is already in service means partial disassembly. If your restoration shop has shop air (and every restoration shop does), get the air kit. It also plays with the rolling jack pneumatic releases if you get those, so the whole air-hydraulic system is integrated on the lift itself instead of dragging a coily hose around. Little quality of life detail that pays back every time you use the lift.

Concrete Under a Restoration Shop Lift

Restoration shops usually spend more time under the lift than any other type of shop, and the concrete gets hammered by anchor wear, dropped tools, and hydraulic fluid over years. The concrete spec for a vehicle storage lift is still 4 inches of 3,000 psi minimum, same as any other application, but we recommend restoration shops seal their slab before install. Epoxy floor coating protects the concrete from oil saturation, makes leaks cleanable, and gives a lighter reflective surface for the shop.

Do the coating before we install the lift. Once the lift is anchored, coating around the columns is a fussy job. If your building is already up and running, we can install first and coat later, but the ideal sequence is new building, cure concrete for thirty days, coat, install lift. On existing buildings, we can work around whatever sequence you are in. Just tell us the state of the floor when we quote and we will factor it in. A cracked slab or an oil-saturated old slab may need remediation before we drill anchors.

Timeline From Order Through First Vehicle Stored

Sequencing matters more than raw calendar time. A vehicle storage lift for a restoration shop should be ordered as soon as you have committed to the space. If we have stock, the lift ships in a week. In parallel, the electrician does the panel work and pulls the circuit, the concrete guy pours or coats the slab, and the door hardware gets modified if needed. Then we come do the install in a day.

Total from order to first-vehicle-stored is usually three to six weeks depending on the trades, not on the lift itself. If your restoration shop is coming online for a car-show season deadline, work backward from that date and give the electrical two weeks lead, the lift install one day, and everything else in between.
